🇳🇵 Nepal Floods: From Emergency Relief to Sustainable Recovery 🇳🇵
The devastating flash floods in Nepal have left a trail of unimaginable loss. Over 620 lives have been lost, more than 2,400 people remain missing, and thousands of families have lost their homes, their loved ones, and their livelihoods . Entire communities have been swept away, and the scale of this tragedy is still unfolding .
While the immediate focus is on providing food, shelter, and medical aid, the Bhuminanda Dhaulidevi Foundation is already looking ahead. The recovery will be long and challenging. Many survivors have lost not only their homes but also their jobs, skills, and sources of income. The World Bank estimates that 82% of Nepal's workforce is in the informal sector, making these families especially vulnerable to economic devastation .
🌱 OUR COMMITMENT: BUILDING BACK STRONGER
The Bhuminanda Dhaulidevi Foundation is committed to supporting the long-term recovery of flood-affected communities. Beyond immediate relief, we will focus on:
💼 Creating Employment and Self-Employment Opportunities
We are developing projects to help survivors rebuild their lives and regain their independence. Our approach is based on proven recovery models that have worked in Nepal and around the world.
1. 🏗️ Cash for Work Programs
We will support initiatives that provide immediate income to affected families while they help rebuild their communities. This could involve clearing debris, repairing roads and water systems, and reconstructing homes. This approach provides urgent financial relief, helps revive the local economy, and restores hope .
2. 🔧 Skills Training and Livelihood Support
We will partner with local organisations to offer training in high-demand skills such as masonry, plumbing, and agriculture. Successful training programs, like the mason training provided by UNICEF after the 2023 earthquake, have equipped people to earn a living while rebuilding their communities .
3. 🌾 Climate-Smart Agriculture
We will support smallholder farmers with training in climate-smart agriculture techniques to help them become more resilient to future floods and droughts. Similar programs have created thousands of green jobs and helped farmers secure their livelihoods .
