Dormition of Theotokos
Today, Greeks all around the world come together to celebrate της Παναγίας, the Dormition of the Theotokos, one of the most sacred and revered days in the Greek Orthodox calendar.
This week at Pythagoras Greek School, we lit the καντηλάκι, spoke about how Δεκαπενταύγουστος is celebrated in different parts of Greece and throughout the Greek diaspora, and explored the beautiful symbolism within the icon of the Dormition. We discussed the life of Mary, her place within the Orthodox tradition, and why the Παναγία has held such a special place in Greek faith, culture and identity for generations.
Whether our students experience this primarily as faith, history, culture or family tradition, it is part of the story of the Greek people and an important part of understanding their Greek heritage.
Χρόνια Πολλά to all celebrating this weekend!

Movie Time at Pythagoras Greek School
What a wonderful way to finish the term! Students enjoyed watching the movie Swapped, in Greek, with many proudly coming dressed in their Aussie colours or favourite sports tops in support of the World Cup. The celebrations included photos on the red carpet, indoor soccer at recess, plenty of snacks and popcorn, and, of course, the movie itself.
A huge thank you once again to our tireless Parent Committee for organising such a fantastic end-of-term event.
We also look forward to meeting with all our parents online during next week’s Parent-Teacher Interviews.
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break!

At Pythagoras Greek School, Mother’s Day has always been celebrated with the enthusiasm, love and importance it deserves.
Each year, our students honour their mums, grandmothers and special mother figures through poetry, drawings, handmade cards and little gifts created with the help of their teachers.
On Friday and yesterday, we congratulated the winners of our annual Mother’s Day Drawing and Poetry Competition at small assemblies and presented them with special gift bags for Mum.
This year, a heartfelt thank you goes to Hellen from our Parents Committee, who thoughtfully purchased beautiful coloured roses for each of our special mums.
We hope all mothers, grandmothers and mother figures are enjoying a beautiful Mother’s Day today.
And on this day of gratitude, we also pause to honour the one mother we all share: Gaia, η Γη, Mother Earth. In Greek mythology, Gaia was one of the first divine beings, the great mother of all life.
She, too, deserves our love, care and kindness.
Happy Mother’s Day. 🌹🌍

What a cracking start to the term! Well done to Theodore for winning this year’s RECC! He really rose above the rest (like a good tsoureki… almost).
