Emotional intelligence is the never-ending work of good ‘humaning’ - and good leading. It makes all the difference.

The simplicity of a pause, a question, an acknowledgement - simple yet so often difficult too in the right moments. I always know when I’ve missed the cue - responded too quickly, shared my first thought without pausing for theirs. The other person closes in, shuts down or moves into polite conversation.

So here’s to the gift of continually engaging with emotional intelligence in all that we do - so relationships thrive.

Responsive routines is something we care deeply about and have helped many early childhood services build capacity in the foundations of our daily life together with children. I often think about how literacy becomes such a joyful exchange when we shift beyond simply learning a skill and begin connecting it to playful encounters, ideas and curiosities that matter to children.

A recent opportunity to engage in some coaching work had us spending time really exploring the complexity of story making - and with all the Book Week shenanigans happening here in Australia, it feels like a particularly fun time to be thinking about stories! We do love a bit of Where’s Wally - especially when you connect sound to the image (listen to the video)

These small moments are such beautiful reminders of just how capable children are when we scaffold their curiosity and give them the tools, time and responsiveness to curate stories of their own.

Titles, sequencing, illustration, creative storyboarding, conversation, revision, persistence… all part of the mix - it is never about writing in isolation. I hope these images might offer some clues that show intentionality but not instruction, meeting children where they are, yet holding space for possibility and surprise!

Resetting, preparing and tending.

Building pedagogical routines amongst a team is one of the ways we ensure the environment is intentionally cared for as part of the everyday.

Environments evolve with children’s engagement. They are moved, tested, disrupted and transformed -and each day they require our attention, care.

A pedagogical routine is a shared practice that privileges what we value -creating predictable ways for a team to protect time and attention for the things we believe matter. When resetting the environment becomes a pedagogical routine, we are not just tidying up. We are noticing what happened here, considering what children might return to, and preparing thoughtfully for what might come next.

The reset is part of the pedagogy.
