⏰ ICUR x throwback thursday: ICUR 2020 Alumni Panellist: Sarah Binte-Daud is an Associate Librarian with the National Library Board of Singapore. She completed a Bachelor and Masters of Arts in English at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). In 2013, she was selected for the Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus (URECA) Programme. In 2014, Sarah was an Communications Director of the ICUR-URECA team at NTU. In 2016, she became student director.

Here is what she had to say about her undergraduate research experiences: “If it wasn’t for these experiences, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to pursue a Master’s degree and present my work at other international conferences”.

⏰ ICUR x throwback thursday: ICUR 2020 Alumni Panellist: Helena Wall is a second-year PhD student in Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick. She is currently researching spoken language skills in 4-5 year olds with the goal of improving understanding of how teachers assess these skills through classroom interactions and improve these assessment methods. Helena completed a Bachelor of Language, Culture and Communication. During this time, she published research on perception and performance of professional competence in the Reinvention Journal, presented research on devices and its use during face to face interactions in a poster presentation at ICUR in 2017, and presented research on mobile technology use within face-to-face group learning tasks in a spoken presentation at ICUR 2018.

⏰ ICUR x throwback thursday: ICUR 2020 Alumni Panellist: James Blake is a final-year postgraduate student at the University of Warwick. His work is focused on space debris, specifically using optical telescopes to detect, track and monitor artificial objects orbiting the Earth. He presented at ICUR in 2013 with research on panspermia, the theory that life can travel throughout the universe aboard vessels such as asteroids.

Here is what he had to say about his undergraduate research experiences: “...my experiences of research as an undergraduate greatly influenced the path I chose to pursue after graduating, and taught me invaluable lessons that have since helped me time and time again”.

⏰ ICUR x throwback thursday: ICUR 2020 Alumni Panellist: Lara Howden is a corporate lawyer at Herbert Smith Freehills in the mergers and acquisitions team. She completed a Bachelor of science, Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Diploma of Languages in Japanese at Monash University. At ICUR, she presented research about legislative reforms concerning food sources.

Here is what she had to say about ICUR: “I think the kind of interdisciplinary approach to research fostered by ICUR is absolutely critical to the world beyond the university campus, and puts all ICUR candidates in good stead to hone their abilities in applying their skills towards all manner of problems that require solving.”

⏰ ICUR x throwback thursday: ICUR 2020 Alumni Panellist: Peter Halat is a first-year Monash-Warwick Alliance PhD student in the field of theoretical chemistry. Peter started his research journey in 2015 by presenting his research in theoretical chemistry at ICUR. In 2016, he joined the Compass program as a mentee. In 2017, he was a Compass mentor, presented research about gas adsorption materials at ICUR, and compared train systems in Melbourne and Fukuoka through network analysis through participating in the GLARP winter unit (now called the IRC program). In 2018, Peter was an ICUR Student Director and Editor the Reinvention Journal. He has had experience as a research assistant in the departments of chemistry, materials science and engineering.

Join us at the ICUR Alumni Panel on 29 September, which will be hosted by our CURIE Student Director (Alumni Engagement), Elaine Phoon! We are featuring five past undergraduate students who have participated in ICUR from diverse fields, including law, languages and science, who are either doing research or working in the private or public sector. This will give a unique opportunity to ask any questions you may have about research, undergraduate and postgraduate studies, university, work and life in general!
