The Australian Jockeys Association was incorporated in 2005 and represents jockeys across Australia via a State-based Association system.

After some discussion between the state jockey associations in late 2001, there was a general consensus that a national body for jockeys should be established. April 8th 2017 will always be remembered as one of the darkest days for Australian jockeys in the modern era.

During trackwork at Toowoomba two former jockeys, Ben Saunders and Wade Clasohm fell and both suffered paraplegia injuries.

That same afternoon there was a terrible accident at Warialda races which claimed the life of much -loved senior jockey Darren Jones.
Apprentice Mel Bolwell was air-lifted to hospital with significant brain trauma injuries, fortunately Mel is making good progress and hopes to return to riding soon.
In that same incident Leanne Henry suffered a shoulder injury.

More importantly every jockey at Warialda, every jockey in NSW and every jockey in Australia lost a friend in Darren Jones.

Our thoughts are today with Darren's family, and they are with the families of Ben & Wade. Our thoughts are with all jockeys who rode at Warialda on Saturday 8th April 2017.

We thank Paul for all his achievements, especially with gaining 1% for jockeys welfare and Superannuation for all jockeys.

Paul will continue as General Manager with the National Jockeys Trust, the charity that assists current and former jockeys who are in necessitous circumstances following a serious injury, illness or sadly death.
