Industry Talk: Subdivision Civil Design 📐 On 31 August, we welcomed Adam Chan, Senior Engineer at Spiire, for an industry talk on Subdivision Civil Design. Students gained practical insight into design processes, urban roads, drainage, sewerage, water, earthworks and lot grading — along with an overview of the software, tools and practices used in the industry. Huge thanks to Adam for giving our students a real look at what it takes to work as a civil design engineer.

Site visit: Fulton Hogan Lara Asphalt Plant 🏭 Our Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Civil) and Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction students got a firsthand look at how asphalt is really made — from material handling and dispatch to quality assurance and sustainable manufacturing. Thanks to the Engineers Australia Geelong Committee and the Joint Victorian Chemical Engineering Committee for organising this hands-on industry experience. Real sites. Real skills. Real career prep.

🎉 Say hello to July's Student of the Month — Somsiri Na Pattalung, Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology!

Somsiri shows up, does the work, and does it well — consistent attendance, on-time submissions, and strong performance across every unit. But what really sets her apart is what she does when things get hard.

When she found out Revit wasn't available for macOS, she didn't wait for someone to fix it for her. She researched it herself, got Windows running through Parallels, and made it work. Then she turned around and helped her classmates set up the same solution — so nobody got left behind.

That's leadership. Not the loudest voice in the room, but the one who makes sure everyone else can keep up too.

She doesn't just meet the requirements — she goes above and beyond, and takes everyone else with her. 🌊

This month's Student of the Month found her own way to practice Rivet (a Windows-only program) on her MacBook at home — then turned around and helped a classmate do the same.

Moving countries for school can feel like you're figuring it all out alone. Moments like this are what turn a classroom into a community.

That's the kind of engineer — and the kind of person — we want to graduate. 💙

What does reinforced concrete design actually look like once it leaves the drawing board?

Join us for our next Industry Talk, "From Design to Reality: Reinforced Concrete Structures," featuring guest speaker Dr Yew-Chin Koay — Senior Specialist in Materials and Structural Engineering, PhD in Structural Engineering, registered Professional Engineer, and Victoria's 2025 Professional Engineer of the Year.

Dr Koay will walk students through applying design principles in real-world engineering practice, structural behaviour and reinforcement detailing, concrete materials and durability, and the site issues that only show up once construction starts — the parts of the job that go beyond the calculations.

Tea at our student lounge, a quick classroom pit stop to pack for the day, and a table tennis break in the Student Hub — just another Day at Danford College. ☕ Then it was study vs. gym vs. coffee (spoiler: coffee won), -it's Melbourne! By the time we made it back to the Danford balcony — skyline and all — one thing was clear: everything here really is connected. Even us.

Meet Jane — Danford College's new Student Experience Ambassador. 🎓
