started with something so small.
Just a simple discussion about the letter H.
“H is for hat.”“H is for horse.”“H is for hive.”
And suddenly, one tiny moment of curiosity opened the door to an entire learning experience.
We started talking about beehives and how bees build their homes using little hexagons. The children slowly sounded out the word together, “hex-a-gon” noticing that strong H sound. Then came the questions.
“What does a hexagon look like?”“How many sides does it have?”“Can we find hexagons in the classroom?”
Little eyes started scanning the room. Little hands started tracing shapes in the air. One conversation naturally led to another, and before we knew it, the children were counting sides, comparing shapes, recognising patterns, discussing bees, honey, and shapes all in one learning moment.
I could see the children were craving a challenge that day, so I quickly created a simple hexagon pattern activity on my notes app based entirely on their interest in that exact moment. Some of the children began copying and extending the patterns while we continued our group discussions about shapes and sides together.
And this right here is school readiness.
Copying patterns strengthens visual processing, concentration, early mathematical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Discussions like these build vocabulary, confidence, listening skills, turn-taking, phonemic awareness, and critical thinking. Even sitting together wondering, questioning, comparing, and sharing ideas is preparing children for future classroom learning.
From the outside, moments like this can sometimes look “small.” Children chatting about bees. A quick worksheet made in the moment. A discussion on the mat. But underneath these little moments, there is deep and meaningful learning taking place.
This is the beauty of child-led learning.
