Irlen lenses are actually Spectral Filters that remove, to varying degrees, some of the wavelengths of light that we know as "colours". This means that they modify the light entering our brain through our eyes. People with Irlen Syndrome are sensitive to some of those wavelengths because they interfere with how the brain "processes" the visual information. Even the brains of people who are blind or vision impaired still receive wavelengths of light through their eyes and amazingly, some of them are still sensitive to some of the wavelengths.
