Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

From Mario 🍄 to colourful crayons 🖍️, Mickey Mouse 🐭, witches 🧙‍♀️, colourful fish 🐠, Bob the Builder 👷‍♂️, Where’s Wally? ❤️🤍 and Miffy 🐰- our team and the our children looked the absolute part in their fantastic dress-ups today!

What a wonderful celebration of books, imagination and creativity! 📖🌈

We loved seeing everyone bring their favourite characters to life and make Book Week such a fun and memorable day. 💕✨

Colour Program – Primary Colours

As part of our colour program in our Nursery Room, the children are exploring the primary colours through a range of creative and sensory experiences.

Each month introduces a new opportunity for children to investigate colour, texture, and different artistic techniques.

This month, the children used natural materials to create artwork on canvas. Each child had the opportunity to participate, developing their fine motor skills through grasping, pressing, and manipulating a variety of natural resources.
The experience encouraged children to take their time, make their own choices, and explore the materials at their own pace.

This open-ended experience supported children’s creativity, curiosity, and confidence as they experimented with different textures, colours, and patterns. By engaging with natural materials, children were also encouraged to connect with their environment and express themselves in meaningful ways.

This was linked to our EYLF Learning Outcomes:

Outcome 1: Children develop a strong sense of identity by making independent choices and confidently participating in the experience.
Outcome 3: Children develop a strong sense of wellbeing as they refine their fine motor skills and coordinate their movements through hands-on exploration.
Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners as they investigate, experiment, and solve problems through creative exploration.
Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators as they express their ideas, thoughts, and creativity through art and interactions with educators and peers.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

This week, we're proudly celebrating 50 years of NAIDOC Week with our toddlers through hands-on learning, creativity, and meaningful conversations. 🖤💛❤️

Our little learners explored the colours of the Aboriginal Flag through hand painting, discovering that:
🖤 Black represents Aboriginal people.
💛 Yellow represents the sun, the giver of life.
❤️ Red represents the red earth and the spiritual connection to Country.

In early childhood, every experience is an opportunity to build understanding, curiosity, and respect. By introducing children to the rich cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in age-appropriate and engaging ways, we help lay the foundations for empathy, inclusion, and a lifelong appreciation of Australia's First Nations peoples.

We feel privileged to celebrate, learn, and grow together as we honour the spirit of NAIDOC Week and the generations who have shared their knowledge, culture, and stories.

🍌 Did you know? Banana peels can help feed our veggie garden! 🌱

At kinder, we’re always looking for fun ways to care for our environment. Instead of throwing banana peels in the bin, we can compost them or add them to our garden to help return valuable nutrients to the soil.

Healthy soil grows healthy plants! 🌼

By making homemade compost and natural fertiliser, we’re reducing waste, caring for the Earth, and teaching children that even everyday food scraps can have a second life.

Our vegetable garden is a wonderful place for children to learn where food comes from, observe nature, and discover how plants grow. Every peel, leaf, and compost bucket helps create a thriving garden full of fresh vegetables and curious young gardeners.

Why not try collecting your fruit and vegetable scraps at home and starting a compost bin with your family?

There’s so much more to Play-Doh than just having fun! 🌈✨

Our children had a wonderful time working together to make Play-Doh with the support of our amazing Room Leader, Poonam who runs our Nursery Room.

This hands-on group experience encouraged teamwork, turn-taking, and following simple instructions as everyone had a chance to help.

Once the Play-Doh was ready, the fun continued!

Exploring and creating with Play-Doh helps strengthen fine motor skills, develop hand-eye coordination, and build the small muscles needed for future writing.

It also provides a rich sensory experience as children squeeze, roll, press, and shape the dough while exploring different colours, textures, and their imaginations.

Learning through play is one of the best ways for children to develop confidence, creativity, and important lifelong skills- and today was filled with smiles, discovery, and lots of colourful fun 🍁

🍲 Vegetable Soup on a Rainy Day 🌧️

There’s nothing better than a warm bowl of homemade minestrone soup on a cold, wet day! Our wonderful Chef Tima prepared a delicious and nutritious soup packed with a variety of fresh vegetables, and it was a big hit with the children.

Today, the children enjoyed serving themselves, choosing just the right amount of soup to fill their tummies. Self-serving encourages independence, builds confidence, and helps children learn to recognise their own hunger and fullness cues.

During our progressive lunch, our teacher Christy sat alongside the children, sharing the mealtime experience and engaging them in conversations about the vegetables in their soup, healthy eating, and their favourite flavours. These meaningful interactions help build language skills, support social connections, and create positive, relaxed mealtime experiences.

A cosy lunch, full tummies, and lots of smiles! ❤️🍲
