The days are getting longer, the sun is setting later, the weather is finally warming, the school year is coming to an end, and the festive season is approaching. This also means many changes are upon us, as more family and friends surround us and different outings, gatherings and commitments arise.
It is important to consider that changes to routine and environments can add different components or stressors to little ones. A seemingly simple gathering of family and friends invokes a whole host of new environments including different smells, sounds, tastes, unfamiliar faces, scenery and location, including type and length of travel. It is to be expected that different or new behaviours may arise. As parents and caregivers it is necessary to be mindful about what behaviours are telling us.
Once we know the purpose of the behaviour it is much easier to understand what little ones can tolerate and we are able to make the necessary changes to support them over the festive season.

Sensory processing or sensory integration is the way the brain receives, organises and interprets sensory input through the nervous system. The brain is bombarded with sensations such as sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell, and movement, as well as internal sensations including hunger and emotions.
A typically developing nervous system is adaptable and maintains an optimal level of arousal. However, when the flow of sensation is disorganised the brain has difficulty forming perceptions.

In early childhood development, one of the most eagerly awaited milestones is a child’s first words. We often place so much emphasis on the use of verbal language that we sometimes overlook the importance of foundational communication skills that evolve before or alongside words. Social communication can be broken down into four steps.

Reading or repeating words, phrases or sentence from a list every day can become boring very quickly, so we need to think of ways to have our children say these same words/phrases/sentences in a way that doesn’t feel like a chore.
So, how can we make daily practice sessions something that our children enjoy and want to complete?

Natasha Kolivas, Speech Pathologist, writes…
Over the last few months I have had the pleasure of spending time in lots of my client’s homes (virtually, that is). During this time, I have noticed that if there is one toy that almost all my families have and that all my kiddos love, it’s LEGO! Whether it’s a small box of mixed pieces or a large expert level construction pack, LEGO or block play is one resource that has become a staple in many therapy sessions. And for a good reason – not only is LEGO highly motivating, but it can allow us to target so many different goals!

Therapy for children with autism often begins after receiving a diagnosis, which usually doesn’t occur until after the child turns two.
This study's findings suggest that starting therapy during the first year of life, when the brain and mind are developing rapidly, may provide even greater benefits.

Therapy for babies showing early signs of autism reduces the chance of clinical diagnosis at age 3
While most children still had some level of developmental difficulties, the therapy boosted their social communication skills, leaving them less likely to meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis.
