This National Science Week, celebrate the young scientists in your care — encourage them to wonder, explore, experiment and discover.

16/08/2026

Science starts with curiosity - as babies explore their world through touching, tasting, dropping, shaking, splashing and observing.

In our Montessori-inspired Family Day Care environments, these simple everyday experiences encourage curiosity, concentration and discovery, allowing babies to learn naturally through their senses and at their own pace. For babies, science isn’t something we teach - it’s something we give them the freedom and opportunity to discover 🤍

Science in Family Day Care doesn’t need to mean complicated experiments or special equipment. It happens naturally every day as children pour, mix, build, dig, splash, plant, observe, question and wonder.

Family Day Care provides the perfect environment for these discoveries. With small groups, familiar surroundings and plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning, educators can follow children’s curiosity and turn simple everyday moments into meaningful science experiences.

This National Science Week, celebrate the young scientists in your care - encourage them to wonder, explore, experiment and discover.

Aug 1–7: World Breastfeeding Week

Breastmilk is the ideal food for babies. It is safe, clean and contains antibodies which help protect against many common childhood illnesses. Breastmilk provides all the energy and nutrients that babies need for the first months of life, and it continues to provide up to half or more of a child’s nutritional needs during the second half of the first year💛

A fascinating little piece of early childhood history…

The Merrill-Palmer Scale of Mental Tests, first developed in 1931, was designed to assess the abilities of children aged approximately 18 months to six years.

While we certainly don’t believe children’s abilities should be defined or ranked by a test, what caught our attention was something quite different…

Many of the activities used in the assessment look remarkably familiar to those of us who know Montessori!

Sorting, matching, puzzles, manipulating objects, recognising shapes, building, problem-solving and using hands-on materials - all experiences that have long had a place within Montessori environments.

The difference, of course, is in the purpose;

In Montessori, these materials provide opportunities for children to explore, practise, problem-solve, develop concentration and build skills at their own pace

It’s fascinating to look back at the history of early childhood development

More than 100 years later, we’re still recognising something Maria Montessori understood so well:

Children learn through doing

World Refugee Day June 20 ❤️💙💛

World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees, helping to mobilise political will and resources so refugees cannot only survive but thrive. Together, we can create communities where all children and families feel valued, supported and connected

“No one chooses to leave everything they love behind. It is a heart-wrenching reality that can happen to anyone, at any moment. As someone who has walked this path, I know it is purely by circumstance that it is not you or I fleeing today. The right to seek safety is a sacred promise of shared humanity, and until everyone is safe, we must keep standing together,” said Maya Ghazal, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.
