Lucas juggled three jobs in first year just to stay at uni. With his dad living with multiple sclerosis, the pressure on his family was immense.
His Ormond scholarship changed everything.
"It's honestly altered the course of my life." – Lucas, 2026 scholarship recipient.

You could have heard a pin drop in the Dining Hall on Monday night. Guest speaker Nikki Moodie, Professor of Indigenous Studies at , gave an extraordinary speech at our National Reconciliation Week Formal Hall about the meaning, and the challenges, of reconciliation in Australia today. Later, Ormond’s MacFarland Choir performed ‘Birrama Mana’, a song in Yorta Yorta and English, composed by Deborah Cheetham. The performance was led by Lillie Walker.
National Reconciliation Week at Ormond is a busy week with lots of events, including a Blak movie night, a crafternoon to raise money for the Aboriginal Community Elders Service and a game of Buroinjin. Huge thanks to Matt Sloane, head of the Indigenous Sub-Committee, and to our Freemantle-Lewis Fellow, Isabella Coates.
Master and Head of College Areti Metuamate said, “Our motto, ‘et nova et vetera’, is about recognising both the new and the old. And reconciliation asks exactly that. To recognise that we inherit histories, traditions, institutions, and truths that existed long before us, while also accepting our responsibility to shape what comes next.”
