💜🌈 Celebrating Wear It Purple Day at Y Community School! 🌈💜

Today, our school team came together to celebrate individuality, inclusion and the importance of creating a world where everyone feels safe, supported and proud to be themselves. 💜

And what better way to celebrate than with a whole lot of colour! 🎨 Our Colour Run brought plenty of laughs, smiles and colourful fun as students and staff got involved.

🎨 Celebrating creativity and community!

We're incredibly proud of two Y Community School students who recently took part in a creative workshop through Whittlesea Tech School, alongside students from other local schools.

Guided by artist Tai Snaith, they explored storytelling, collage and character design, creating original artworks inspired by their own ideas and experiences.

Their finished pieces were proudly featured in the inaugural exhibition at Outside Gallery @ Galada, part of the new lightbox gallery. The exhibition attracted a wonderful community turnout and received an overwhelmingly positive response.

Congratulations to our talented young artists for representing Y Community School with such creativity and confidence. We can't wait to see where your artistic journey takes you next.

Continuing to reflect on our NAIDOC Week celebrations at Y Community School 💛🖤❤️

Our students took part in a hands-on basket weaving workshop, learning traditional weaving techniques from Olivia at Wudtjameen. As they carefully created their own woven pieces, they also explored the cultural significance of weaving as a practice that has been passed down through generations.

Experiences like these provide meaningful opportunities to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, celebrate the sharing of knowledge and craftsmanship, and build a deeper respect for the world's oldest continuing living cultures.

Looking back on our NAIDOC Week celebrations at Y Community School 💛🖤❤️

Our staff and students enjoyed an incursion, Reptile Encounters - Meet the Rainbow Serpent, meeting some of Australia's incredible native wildlife, including a crocodile, turtle, snake, goanna, black cockatoo and possum.

Experiences like these help bring learning to life, creating opportunities to deepen students' understanding of Australia's unique environment while strengthening their appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their enduring connection to Country.

Camp isn't just a break from the classroom, it's the classroom in disguise. 🏕️

One of the greatest gifts we can give our students is the chance to challenge themselves in a new environment. To try, fail, laugh, adapt, and try again.

From navigating the water to working through challenges as a team, every activity asked our students to dig a little deeper, back themselves, and lean on each other.

The growth we saw was something else!

Today, we were honoured to welcome Wurundjeri man Colin Hunter Jnr Jnr to Y Leisure City and Y Community School.

Colin led a heartfelt Welcome to Country and traditional Smoking Ceremony, bringing together staff from Y Community School, Y Leisure City, our Support Office team, volunteers and students to acknowledge Country and reflect on the significance of this important cultural practice.

During the ceremony, Colin shared that the Smoking Ceremony is an ancient cleansing ritual using the smoke of native plants to cleanse the land, ward off negative spirits and welcome people in a spirit of respect and connection. He warmly invited everyone to walk through the fragrant eucalyptus smoke, creating a meaningful moment of reflection and belonging.

At Y Whittlesea, we are committed to celebrating and embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and perspectives into our everyday practice. Experiences like these strengthen our understanding, encourage meaningful conversations and deepen our respect for the world's oldest continuing living cultures.

Our journey of learning, listening and walking together continues throughout the year, and we are grateful for opportunities to share this journey with our staff, students and wider community.

As we enjoy the first day of school holidays, we look back on a wonderful Term 2, one that saw us head off on our very first Y Community School Camp. 🏕️

Our first ever camp delivered everything we hoped for and more. Teamwork was tested and strengthened, connections were built around campfires and on the water, and memories were made that no classroom could ever recreate. From the challenges that pushed our students to dig deeper, to the late night chats that brought them closer together, every moment counted.

We are so proud of every student who showed up, gave it a go, and made it truly unforgettable.

Here's to a well-earned break and to an amazing Term 3 ahead.
