Reconciliation Week at Astra 🖤💛❤️

We’ve been having some really beautiful conversations and experiences with the children this week as we explore the meaning behind the Aboriginal flag through play, creativity and connection 🌿

Using playdough and natural materials, the children created their own flags while talking about the sun, the people and the land ☀️

These moments might look simple, but they create such meaningful opportunities for children to learn respect, understanding and connection to Country from such a young age ✨

Always learning, always listening and always growing together 🤍

Today we proudly showed our support at the National Sorry Day lunch, taking time to reflect, listen, and stand together in acknowledgement of the Stolen Generations and the ongoing journey of healing and reconciliation.

Today is National Sorry Day.

A day to acknowledge the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations, and to reflect on the lasting impact of past government policies that caused profound grief, loss and trauma for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

National Sorry Day is an important opportunity for all Australians to listen, learn and continue the journey of truth-telling, healing and reconciliation.

The Kimberley Native Violet, the official symbol of National Sorry Day, represents the resilience and survival of the Stolen Generations.

As we approach National Reconciliation Week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect, acknowledge the past and commit to building a stronger future together.

Off to the library to choose new stories for our centre📚✨

There is something so special about watching children carefully browse the shelves, following their interests and selecting books that spark their curiosity. Each story becomes an invitation to imagine, wonder and learn together.

At Astra Early Learning, we believe that books open the door to endless possibilities and support children to develop a lifelong love of reading. ❤️📖

What happens to animals when oil reaches them? 🐠🛢️

Through hands-on exploration, children begin to see, feel, and question the impact on our oceans. Curiosity grows into empathy, and play becomes powerful thinking.

Because even the smallest hands can hold big questions 🌊💭

A day full of wonder beneath the sea 🌊✨

Our visit to was nothing short of magical. From watching the graceful rays glide above us to coming face to face with sharks and vibrant marine life, the children were completely immersed in the experience 🐠🦈

This excursion was more than just a visit, it was an opportunity to spark curiosity, ask questions, and deepen our connection with the natural world. Through shared moments of awe and discovery, we explored the beauty of marine ecosystems and the importance of caring for our environment.

Back at the centre, the conversations continue… theories are forming, drawings are evolving, and our learning journey is diving even deeper 💭🎨

This week, our space transformed into an underwater world, inviting curiosity, creativity and connection. Through carefully curated provocations: real shells, sea creatures, ocean imagery and mark-making materials. The children explored what they see, feel and imagine about life beneath the sea.

“What sea animals did you notice?” became more than a question… it became a pathway for thinking, drawing, storytelling and meaning-making. From jellyfish to sharks, each mark on paper reflects not just what the children observed, but how they interpret the world around them.

This is the beauty of mark making, where lines become ideas, and ideas become voices 💙

Last week, we came together to reflect and honour ANZAC Day 🌺

Through a simple yet powerful provocation “What does remembrance look like to you?” The children explored their understanding using the language of art. Inspired by poppies, a symbol of remembrance, they expressed their thoughts, feelings, and connections through gentle brush strokes and meaningful mark making.

Each flower represents more than just paint on paper it holds stories, conversations, and the voices of our children as they begin to understand respect, gratitude, and community.

In true Reggio Emilia spirit, this experience was about the process the thinking, the dialogue, and the emotions shared together. It was beautiful to witness how each child interpreted remembrance in their own unique way.

Lest we forget ❤️

Lest we forget.

Today we honour the courage, sacrifice, and spirit of all who have served and continue to serve. We remember those who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy, and we reflect with gratitude on their legacy.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
