At the Restorative Workshop, we covered three simple but highly valuable tips that can elevate everyday adhesive restorative dentistry.

1. Use a sandblaster routinely
In modern adhesive restorative dentistry, sandblasting can make a big difference to surface preparation and overall bonding outcomes.

2. Use caries detector dye
Even when you think you have fully cleared the caries, there can still be infected dentine left behind. Caries detector dye is a simple tool that helps reduce the risk of missing it.

3. Do not cut corners with bonding
Whatever bonding system you use, know it properly and follow the instructions for use exactly. If it says rub for 20 seconds, count 20 seconds. If it says air dry, air dry. The details matter.

Often, it is these small clinical habits that make the biggest difference over time.

Perio-Restorative Interface 5 Key Takeaways:

1. Implant restorative emergence angles of greater than >30 degrees, doubles the periimplantitis risk in a general population, and even more so in a periodontitis susceptible patient

2. Biology beats engineering and artistry, respect the patient’s periodontal susceptibility to inflammation. 30-50% of adults over 45 years of age have moderate-severe periodontitis. Respect these patients and their susceptibility to subgingival restorative margins.

3. Most patients do not benefit from dentures that replace molars, and find a shortened dental arch sufficient. Dentures does increase the risk of caries and attachment loss on abutment teeth.

4. Resin bonded bridges should be considered first treatment options for maxillary lateral incisors and lower incisors in periodontally susceptible patients due to the higher risk of peri-implantitis

5. Subgingival restorative margins can lead to chronic inflammation, periodontitis, recession, or in some cases stability. In posterior areas, the worst case scenario can often be managed, in the anterior/aesthetic zone, the same consequence can be disastrous.

Explaining periodontal disease to patients can be challenging. Clinical terms like periodontitis, attachment loss, and pockets can quickly confuse patients, so the key is to keep explanations simple and relatable.

Dr Alex Khominsky, specialist periodontist and educator at gDR, shares these principles when communicating periodontal disease to patients:

1. Start by explaining that periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the bone supporting the teeth, not just the gums.

2. Clarify the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis affects the gums, while periodontitis involves bone loss.

3. Focus on bone erosion around the tooth, which patients understand more easily than technical terms.

4. Explain that early periodontal disease often has no pain, but signs like bleeding when brushing or flossing can appear.

5. Use simple analogies. Calculus can be described like a splinter around the tooth that causes inflammation.

6. Explain that bacteria under the gums harden into calculus (tartar), which irritates the surrounding tissue.

7. In susceptible patients, this inflammation can lead to progressive bone loss around the teeth.

8. Describe treatment simply: remove the bacterial deposits and calculus through periodontal therapy.

9. Discuss risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, genetics, and immune health.

10. Emphasise that periodontal care requires ongoing maintenance and good oral hygiene, not just a single treatment.

Clear communication improves patient understanding, compliance, and long-term outcomes.

Good clinical photography is one of the most underrated skills a dentist can build.

Clear photos improve documentation, treatment planning, patient communication, and the way you assess your own work over time.

A few simple fundamentals make a big difference:
capture the smile line properly, reduce motion blur with good lighting and flash, use your team to help with retraction and mirrors, and remember that you do not need the most expensive setup to get strong results.

What matters most is consistency, technique, and understanding the basics well.

These are the kinds of practical skills that help dentists elevate both their clinical workflow and the way they present their work.

Most practice owners believe profitability comes from working more clinically.

In reality, sustainable practice growth comes from developing high performing associates.

When clinicians are confident, productive and aligned with the practice vision, the entire practice performs better. Patients receive better care, team morale improves, and the practice owner gains the ability to step back from the chair without sacrificing growth.

But many practice owners struggle with the same challenges:

1. How do you develop associates into high performers?

2. How do you motivate clinicians while maintaining culture?

3. How do you step back clinically while keeping the practice growing?

4. How do you avoid spending all your time training your team?

Dr Alex Khominsky from gDR is joining Prime Practice for a live conversation on how high performing associates directly influence practice profitability.

This session will cover practical strategies for developing clinicians, improving performance, and creating systems that allow practice owners to scale.
