Brett Berquist, Director International at The University of Auckland and a member of the IEAA Research Committee argues that employability and international student working rights will be "the new leading edge of competition for international student recruitment". While destinations that have favourable employment policies for post-study work (PSW) may be the top choice, Berquist warns that messaging needs to be managed and work rights and work opportunities need to be distinguished when recruiting students. Earlier in the year, the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE)'s Steve Nerlich presented us with real-time data on onshore and offshore student visa holders which despite the unprecedented times Australia had faced late 2019 and in 2020 the data supported the view that the sector remained strong.
