Indonesia Forum Visiting Scholar Presentation
Title: Perceptions of Chinese Indonesians Holding Different Public Offices
By: Dr Wu-Ling Chong, Senior Lecturer Department of Southeast Asian Studies Universiti Malaya (Asia Institute University of Melbourne Visiting Scholar) and co-authors Prof Burhanuddin Muhtadi and Kennedy Muslim from Indikator Politik Indonesia, Jakarta
Date: Thursday 19th of September 12-1pm AEST Melbourne
Location: Room 321, Sidney Myer Asia Centre, Parkville Campus
Abstract:
This study examines the perceptions towards Chinese Indonesians holding public offices at various levels from president to governor or mayor in Indonesia. The opening up of a more liberal political space and the revocation of discriminatory laws against Chinese Indonesians after the fall of Suharto in May 1998 have motivated many Chinese Indonesians to actively get involved in politics. But as time passed, resistance towards the political participation of Chinese Indonesians began to emerge, particularly towards those running for regional or local political executive head positions such as governor and mayor in certain areas. Based on data obtained from various national surveys, this study contends that in comparison with religion, the ethnicity of Chinese Indonesians matters more in influencing perceptions of Chinese Indonesians holding public offices.

Wednesday, 28 August 2024
12.30–1.30pm
Sidney Myer Asia Centre
Room 321, Level 3
Abstract: Sunda Wiwitan is a local belief system (Indonesian: aliran kepercayaan) in Sundanese speaking areas of West Java, Indonesia. The documentary Finding the Book of Life in the Land of AKUR: Protecting Nature and Cultural Heritage by Positioning Women in Sustainable Business (2023) describes the journey of the Sunda Wiwitan women as economic actors, how they gain entrepreneurship skills and understand women’s access to and control over sustainable natural resources. The presentation will provide deeper insight into how women’s social and cultural practices through creating a batik eco-textile business can support sustainability and fight against marginalisation, both for the women themselves and more broadly for their environment.
