There’s a LOT of “Consultation” videos floating around at the minute, and yes I’m gonna be controversial and say it, I am yet to see a good one… 🤷‍♂️ Here’s what I mean 👇

Why are most hairstylists asking their clients how to do their own job? 🧐

When I order a steak at a restaurant (controversial point number 2 - it’s only an example, c’mon), the chef doesn’t come out to my table and ask me “what am I doing with this meal today, sir? How am I gonna cook it?”; The steak is on a designed menu and the only choice I get is how the steak is cooked, essentially how much blood or redness I want to see 🥩 I choose the restaurant wisely, I make my decision and I let the professional do his work…

Example 2: If I had a pain in my tooth and I went to a dentist and they asked me: “so what are we doing today mate? How am I going to sort this out?” - I’d be extremely worried, confused and uncomfortable…

This starts what I call a solution-based consultation which is a bloody nightmare and is full easily misinterpreted jargon and desperate proving energy 🤮

Most clients are spitting out words but the words don’t convey what they are trying to express, we as professional stylists need to get behind the words… The majority of it is hot air 🌬️ Stuff they have seen on TikTok or YouTube 🥸

We did a role play in an education session I held today and I helped the guys get behind the words... I showed them an easier, much more empowering way to do the consultation. It put me in the driver seat whilst letting the client feel like they were in control ✅✅💥

Instead of asking your clients for solutions on how to do your own job, try ask them about feeling…

A statement as simple as: “talk to me about your hair…” will give you all the information you’ll ever need…

The more you know about hair and how to create amazing hairstyles, the more you’ll be able to stand in your power.

I suggest closing that gap first.

Simplify things, don’t justify things…

I hate to admit it but once upon a time I really cared about “looking successful” without realising that everything I was doing was for other people’s validation 🥲

Worst of all, most of those people I didn’t even know and I later found out nobody even cared…

I’d work my ass off to buy THINGS I didn’t need to impress people that are also stuck in the same cycle.

Life and business is about how we allocate our resources (money, time energy) into infinite possibilities. That’s STRATEGY 101. Priorities.

Buying a Rolex you can’t afford is a s**t strategy and a s**t priority, sorry. I know people will argue that Rolex’s hold their value blah blah blah.. and I agree, but let’s be honest - if you can’t really afford it, the money you invest in that today could be invested WAY more effectively, resulting in many many Rolex's a few years down the line.

Plus, what’s it all in the name of? Status? The people at the top, who really matter, don't care.

If only people saw the value in and invested in knowledge as much as they see the value investing in things. The irony is that they’d have more things 🤷‍♂️

It is not about the money we make but the money we keep and invest. That's when scale happens 📈

Investing in my education has enabled me to always find new and exciting ways to live my life and make far more money that I could have ever imagined from hair.

Now it's time to pass that forward 🔮
