You don’t have to buy everything off the school booklists if you already have unused stuff at home.

We’re spending an hour or two going through unused books from previous years and testing what stationary items we actually need before simply buying more.

This will certainly save us money too!

The Australian Bird of the Year is happening now which basically means the public vote for their favourite bird. Or birds; cos I’ve already voted for two different birds over the first two days and it’s tricky cos I like so many of them!

Each day, five with the lowest votes are eliminated until a winner is chosen. You can vote every day until 15 October.

So excited about our local park visitor! It’s a long wait between koalas; the last one was just over 12 months ago in this same area of Sweetwater Creek.

It showed up just in time to be recorded for the iNaturalist Biodiversity Blitz for Frankston.

Look how cute this little critter is!!

It’s a peacock spider and it’s been recorded on iNaturalist as part of this month’s bio blitz.

Basically, local councils are competing to see which has the most diversity of living things. Kind of like Pokémon Go for adults - and I’m hooked!

Latest mend project was actually more preventative than a fix.
I always wear the inner thigh area of my jeans out before anywhere else, so before they actually tear, I’ve stitched in some large denim patches.
I cut the pieces from some old jeans and hand stitched with a matching thread.

We always find these items on beach cleans: silicone tops, tiling separators and pen lids.

Makes you think about how construction materials end up on the beach.

That was a topic for discussion with 3199 Frankston Beach Patrol and a local school group that came to collect beach litter this morning.

Together we removed 8kg of waste from the beach.

‘Tis the season to don the waders and remove the environmental weeds from my little patch of creek in my backyard.

This space is right up against the wire fence line of “no man’s land” and therefore it is a weedy mess and it keeps on creeping into my garden.

I have seen so many native animals and birds down here in my backyard and I’m determined to make it into a haven for all the critters.
Except the snakes, they can keep moving along!

My kids went along today and were able to make these cute sea creatures using waste materials supplied (collected off the beach) - a crab and a jellyfish 🦀 🪼

I stopped in to look around yesterday and took a few photos but you just have to see it in person if you’re able. It’s free to view during the festival dates (8-18) and if you’d like to get creative, Liz will be there next Saturday 10-1.

There are other sustainability-related events and activities during the festival and I’ll give my own business a plug: Roving Refills Frankston pop-up refill shop will be at Frankston library Friday 16 May 11:30-1:30 for refilling!

The mighty powerful owl - the largest owl on the continent. And it’s listed as vulnerable.

So excited to have spotted it recently in the bush.

It’s just one reason for us to do what we can to create a more sustainable and kind planet.

Easter foil is recyclable… when it’s balled into a fist size or tennis ball size lump.

Those little bits of foil will simply slip through the recycling machinery if left loose, but bundled up they have the best chance. And aluminum is easily recycled.

So here I’ve used a large piece of foil from a meal, which is split in the middle so not really good for reusing, but I’ve made a makeshift “bowl” to put all our smaller bits of foil in.

After Easter it will be balled up and put in the recycling bin.

It’s been a while between mends, but these shorts are overdue.

Once upon a time they were jeans. Mended jeans. Then they became shorts and required extra mends. Now to cover up a few new worn patches.

A little scrap fabric and some freestyle stitching with colourful threads and a needle and they are ready to go again.
