Today is the anniversary of Rosalind Franklin’s death in 1958. Franklin is best known for her work with x-ray crystallography, particularly for her image of a DNA fragment that was critical to determining the structure of DNA in 1953. Her contributions to that discovery have been the cause of a great deal of controversy, as her pivotal role was significantly downplayed. She passed away at the age of 37 from ovarian cancer, which may have been exacerbated by the chronic exposure to x-rays.

In 1962 James Watson, Francis Crick, and Franklin’s colleague Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for determining the structure of DNA. Franklin was not nominated, as the Nobel is not awarded posthumously.

Although Franklin may not have received the credit she deserved during her lifetime, it is never too late to correct the historical record and pay proper tribute to the amazing work achieved by this woman during her life that was tragically cut short.
