Melbourne University Philosophy Society - MUPS

Driven by despair caused by adverse fortune, Boethius the prisoner resorts to Muses of Poetry for comfort. This is to change when he is visited by Lady Philosophy, Athena or Philosophia, the goddess of all who inquire, who represents complete realization of all potentials of human reason. She establishes herself as the true source of comfort with access to everlasting Truth.

Athena reminds him that the true philosopher is condemned to suffer at the hands of the evil and the wicked. Her true protégé should counter with nothing other than self-mastery. One should position oneself above fortune, good or bad.

The prisoner started public service purely to embody the tenet of Plato where philosopher rulers will bring peace and prosperity to common people. He has always stood for justice and honesty. Yet in the end, he is destroyed by the very Senate whose integrity he seems to be the sole champion. Why is it that the wicked always triumphs?

MUPS is super excited to kick off our journal with an Environmental Philosophy Essay Competition💥

We encourage submissions that bring philosophy into popular environmental topics such as climate change, sustainability, and the circular economy. Do not worry about being perfectly on theme; our main goal is to kickstart the MUPS journal, and so any insightful essays are welcome! Get creative with it! 💃

Prizes:
1st Place – $100 cash prize
2 Runners-Up – $25 cash prize each
All submissions will receive a MUPS bookmark and sticker!

Deadline: 5th of September
Word count: 1,000–2,000 words
Who can enter? Anyone! Whether you’re studying philosophy, biology, or anything in between - undergraduate or postgraduate - we want to hear your ideas.

To submit: Send your essay as a Word doc to [email protected], with the subject line Essay Competition – Your Name. Please include a small blurb with your submission.
