BREAKING NEWS: ACADEMIC BOARD REJECTS RAMSAY CENTRE SCHOLARSHIP
The University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) proudly welcomes the Academic Board’s decision today to reject the proposed scholarship from the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation.
This is a significant victory for students, staff, and the broader University community who stood together to defend the integrity of the University of Melbourne.
The outcome reflects months of principled advocacy by those who refused to accept that financial donations should come at the cost of academic independence or the values of an inclusive university.
“Today's outcome is a victory for students, staff and everyone who stood up for the integrity of our University. It sends a clear message that academic independence cannot be compromised.” - Lushy Chinganya, UMSU President
“Today's decision is a great demonstration of integrity and care. I commend our University community for standing up to the face of what could have been a very troubling outcome.” - Anyang Wal, UMSU People of Colour Officer
We extend our sincere thanks to the staff, students, alumni and supporters who worked tirelessly to raise concerns and advocate for this result.
While we celebrate this outcome, the work is not over. We call on the University to make a clear commitment that organisations such as the Ramsay Centre will not be given influence within our institution.
Our University should remain a place where scholarships are guided by academic integrity, not ideological interests, and where every student can feel that they belong.
