Australian schoolboy shares top prize at prestigious Moscow piano competition 29/07/2026

Melbourne pianist Charlie Wu recently won first prize at the Grand Piano Competition in Moscow, Russia. The competition final took place at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall where Charlie performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 accompanied by Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra.

Charlie achieved his Licentiate Diploma in Piano, with Distinction in 2024, guided by his teacher Glenn Riddle.

If you want to hear Charlie's award winning talent, he will be performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 accompanied by the Maroondah Symphony Orchestra in August.

The streets of the Queen Victoria Market will come alive with the sound of music when Melbourne Youth Orchestras (MYO) presents The Big Busk on Saturday 19 September 2026, transforming one of Naarm, Melbourne's most iconic destinations into a vibrant celebration of young musical talent. 🎶

💫 Following the success of its inaugural event in 2025, which raised $35,000, MYO has set a fundraising target of $50,000 for 2026.

Funds raised will support MYO's Future Fund, a long-term initiative working towards a broader goal of ensuring young people across Victoria continue to have access to outstanding ensemble music education, performances, and creative opportunities for generations to come.

The MYO Big Busk is more than a fundraising event; it's a celebration of community, creativity and the transformative power of music education.

Last week, AMEB Rockschool examiner Daryl McKenzie hosted a rock band master class alongside Arts Centre Melbourne as part of their school holiday program, Academy.

This event gave young musicians the opportunity to gain personalised feedback, tips and tricks from one of Australia’s leading music educators.

The groups were visited by the Parliamentary Secretary for Education Nina Taylor MP, who was accompanied by Arts Centre Melbourne’s CEO Karen Quinlan and Government Partnerships Specialist Greta Williams.

A day of great music and amazing learning opportunities.

🎶Meet Keilen from Victoria – a Silver AMEB Award recipient who stepped beyond performance to become a mentor and leader 🎶

From arranging music for a cello ensemble to mentoring younger musicians and running a fundraiser, Keilen embraced every challenge. Keilen says that the AMEB Award program “helped me become more confident and better at mentoring others, and that’s one of the reasons I got chosen as the Design and Arts Captain at my school.”
