Find a resilient and sustainable secondary power supply for your building 20/07/2023

Commercial buildings often install a back up power supply to ensure operational continuity in the case of a power outage. While outages happen infrequently in business centres like Melbourne, Sydney, London or Vancouver, every minute of downtime can lead to huge business losses.

Traditionally, the default emergency power supply has been a generator, powered by diesel. However, the energy market is becoming more sustainable and decision makers are increasingly considering how every business choice helps them on their journey towards net zero.

In this article, Wayne Stewart, our Electrical Section Manager in London, talks solutions and explores how to find a resilient and sustainable secondary power supply for your building.

Thanks for joining our electrical engineering celebration this week. We hope you’ve enjoyed the chance to learn more about our people, our projects and the ways electrical engineering is shaping the world.

Sydney based Associate Director and electrical engineer Liana Paolino has enjoyed design and problem solving from an early age.

Her path has taken her from strength to strength, from the practical application of STEM subjects in school to a successful engineering career.

She speaks passionately about innovation and seizing opportunities to extend her technical and client skillset.

“It’s an exciting time to be an… engineer and especially in the field of electrical engineering. It’s a career path that provides continuous challenges and learning opportunities as we help our clients respond to developments in technology, sustainability-driven initiatives and society as a whole.

For example, “electric vehicle charging is a topical subject on most of our projects. This technology brings new challenges for us to address such as managing additional electrical load through smart charging and load management systems, and mitigating fire safety risks.” – Liana Paolino

Electrical Project Engineer Bella Ekrami enjoys the versatility inherent in electrical engineering.

Based in Canberra, she cites examples such as power distribution, renewable energy generation, manufacturing installations, robotics and automation to back up her claim.

It’s just a starting point for a field rich with possibilities.

She’s also fascinated by engineering in all its forms.

“…everything we see around us is designed or built by an engineer… if something can be imagined, an engineer can make it possible!

“…the building services field is being driven by the imperative need for energy efficiency, sustainability and smart technologies… Electrical engineers will continue to hold a vital position in shaping the future of buildings.” – Bella Ekrami

Thang Bui is a respected Associate CAD Designer, and an important member of our electrical engineering team.

Based in Melbourne, he started out in hydraulics and shifted focus to electrical engineering to deepen his understanding of other building services.

It's a journey that has seen him work on some big projects, with one of his favourites Victoria’s award winning New Bendigo Hospital.

“NDY delivered the design for all building services, which were informed by extensive 3D modelling.

“The outcome for the community was fantastic, and expanded capacity including an integrated cancer centre and new psychiatric inpatient facility…

I worked closely with the architectural team to achieve a high level of 3D coordination, which benefited the construction team and resulted in the great facility it is now.” – Thang Bui

Based in our Vancouver office, Senior Electrical Engineer Indpreet Kaur grew up surrounded by engineering.

Her dad is also an electrical engineer, and taught her how thermal power plant works as a child.

As a result, she’s clear on the importance of electrical engineering to the world – it keeps equipment running and the lights on.

She’s also clear on the importance of heritage conservation, and reflects on the iconic Arts & Crafts Hotel becoming all electric.

“I am developing a comprehensive electrical system design for a heritage building. This project is a currently gutted 7 storey commercial office building and is being repurposed into a circa 70 key hotel…

“This heritage building is completely electric… Given the completely renewable grid in British Columbia, we are ensuring that the client has a minimal carbon footprint that will comply with 2050 regulated energy targets.” – Indpreet Kaur

Renee Fourie, a Director based in our Perth office, loves the career variety electrical engineering offers her.

She started out in biomedical sciences and fearlessly pivoted to engineering on realising she wanted something different.

As NDY’s project leader on Murdoch University’s Boola Katitjin Building, she’s taken innovation by the horns and raised it to groundbreaking.

At every turn, there’s something amazing about Boola Katitjin, Western Australia’s largest mass engineered timber building.

NDY delivered “…core building and specialist engineering services designs for the Boola Katitjin Building.

“The lack of suspended ceilings created some challenges for high level services. We needed to ensure that these systems did not distract from the timber, but rather enhance each space.” – Renee Fourie

Adelaide based Associate Electrical Engineer Mun Leng Ng has always been a problem solver, aiming for bigger and better solutions with each step she takes.

From experimenting on her dad’s calculators as a child to delivering technical excellence in her electrical designs, she understands innovation often stems from a creative approach.

She also understands the power of this approach when it comes to designing buildings the community will enjoy and want to use.

“My career highlight project so far is the City of Salisbury Community Hub. It is not the largest and tallest building or site I have worked on, but it always has a special place in my heart…

“Our client’s goal was to create a ‘gathering point’ for the community that is inviting and family friendly and the project has achieved just that.” – Mun Leng Ng

Anyone responsible for a business, facility or building wants to prevent a power outage. A minute of downtime can risk lives, cost millions and ruin reputation.

Unfortunately, it often takes a major failure for facilities managers and operational teams to appreciate the value of a metering system – one which monitors the quality of their power supply and helps to identify the faults which take their facility down.

In this article, Brendan Murphy, our Mission Critical Market Sector Leader in Melbourne, explores ways to create tangible, meaningful benefits from the data in your building’s electricity meter.

Electrical engineering is fundamental to building services.

The correct power requirements support every market sector and keep our world turning. For example, where would we be without the right power behind the mechanical services in an operating theatre? Or the lift in your office building and you need to climb up to level 50?

This week at NDY, we’re celebrating our electrical engineers and the industry shaping work they do. They’ll give you insights on current trends and future innovations and reflect on what they do, their career stories and projects.

NDY’s Group Technical Director of electrical engineering, John Boatto, opens our weeklong salute by introducing himself and his team. He’s a quiet achiever and talks about his near miss with electricity as a child, his penchant for fixing things and some core truths about electrical engineering.

“NDY provides electrical design in all our offices. All of our market sectors are supported by our electrical teams and electrical design is fundamental to what we do.

“With the transition away from fossil fuels, electrical energy is vital for every building’s function and is the soul of Making Spaces Work.” – John Boatto
