We're excited to be partnering with Heights College Rockhampton as they continue their Little Learners Love Literacy® journey.

Over two days, our Teacher Coach Suzanne worked alongside teachers and the leadership team, spending time in classrooms, modelling lessons, sharing practical strategies, and answering questions along the way. It was a great opportunity to celebrate what was already working well while supporting the team with practical next steps for strong, consistent implementation.

We're looking forward to continuing this partnership over the next 12 months and seeing the confidence and consistency across the school continue to grow.

The difference between decoding and guessing

Two children say “cat”, but how they arrive at the word is different.

When a child decodes, they look at the letters, say the sounds and blend them together. When a child guesses, they use the picture or context without paying attention to the letters.

Correctly guessing a word can look like reading, but it does not give children a reliable strategy for reading unfamiliar words.
