We’ve been noticing something happening in interiors lately.
For all our love of faster, smarter and newer, we seem to be craving things with a little more history to them.

Patchwork. Embroidery. Worn timber. Old pottery. Quilts. Things made slowly, used often and allowed to show their age.

We’re calling it The Ranch Revival.

Not because everyone suddenly wants to live on a ranch, but because there’s something about the way ranch interiors bring together utility and beauty, old and new, softness and grit. A combination that feels particularly good right now.

It’s something we explored a lot with Dakota. Over the next little while, we’re digging into why.

Ranch is a mood, not a costume.

Success is a funny thing. From the outside, there are milestones that look very much like “making it”. From the inside, apparently the nerves don’t get the memo.

As the founder and Creative Director of Sage x Clare, Phoebe has spent more than a decade building the brand, and has a few thoughts on what success actually feels like when you’re the one living it.

In her latest Love Notes, she reflects on growth, uncertainty and what happens when the thing you’ve spent years building starts to feel very real.

A quilt used to be something you kept for decades. We really love that idea.

Not because everything was necessarily better back then, but because there was an expectation that the things you brought into your home would stay with you for a while.

We thought about that a lot with Dakota. We wanted to make bedding you could get attached to. Prints you’d still love after you’d changed the room around them. Quilts that get softer, silk pillowcases that find their way onto completely different beds, pieces that slowly become part of your home.

We’ve become so used to thinking about interiors aesthetically that sometimes we forget how personal they can become.

The things we love most aren’t always the newest or the most perfect. They’re often the things we’ve lived with long enough to have a history with.

That’s what we hope for Dakota. That you love it now, but perhaps even more once it’s been yours for a while.

One of the ideas we kept returning to with Dakota was that practicality and beauty don’t need to live separate lives. It’s something ranch living has understood for a long time. The things used every day can still carry pattern, detail and a sense of artistry.

Our robes felt like a natural place to explore that.

The silhouette stays relaxed and useful. The pattern brings the expression. And something as ordinary as getting out of the shower suddenly becomes a little more considered.

Because we’re far more interested in making everyday things special than saving special things for occasionally.

We think interiors have become a little too precious.

The sofa nobody eats on. The towels reserved for guests. The tablecloth waiting for an occasion important enough to deserve it.

Ranch homes gave us an interesting counterpoint while designing Dakota. Practicality and beauty weren’t opposing ideas. Things could be decorative and still work hard. Beautiful textiles were folded, dragged around, sat on and lived with. We love that.

Perhaps the ultimate sign of a beautiful home isn’t how carefully everything has been preserved. It’s how freely everything gets used.

We’ve always had a soft spot for the textiles you find in old ranch homes.

Bandanas folded into drawers. Woven blankets thrown over the back of a chair. Needlework, checks and florals that have somehow all ended up in the same room and are much better for it.

What we love is that none of it was necessarily designed to go together.

That became an important idea for Dakota. Rather than repeating one motif or making every pattern speak the same language, we wanted contrast. Something graphic beside something romantic. A bold check against detailed embroidery. Tufting and fringe bringing another layer of texture altogether.

It’s a way of designing that feels much more collected than coordinated. Each piece has its own character, but there’s enough of a thread between them to make it all belong.

That’s the difference between borrowing an aesthetic and understanding what makes it work.

Our Dakota collection is inspired by a life lived close to the land.

Sprawling ranches surrounded by mountains. Textured mud brick walls. Warm wooden beams worn smooth by time. Mornings that begin to the sound of grazing horses and long days spent outside.

Then, the ritual of coming home. Dusty, sun-warmed and ready for a steaming hot shower.

It’s this contrast we love most about Dakota. The ruggedness of life outdoors, met with the comfort and beauty of home.

Not all inspiration is visual.

Sometimes it’s an idea that quietly rearranges the way you think.

We’ve been learning about a number of concepts within Japanese philosophy lately. Far richer and more nuanced than we could capture in a single post, but these five have given us plenty to think about.

We’d love to hear if you’ve come across any Japanese philosophies that have stayed with you.
