Hello everyone,

At last Thursday’s GRA meeting, Joel Kimber, Head of Government Relations and Advocacy at Hume City Council (HCC), presented an update on six key advocacy priorities currently being progressed by Council:

Duplication of Somerton Road

Duplication of Mickleham Road

Duplication of Sunbury Road

Duplication of Donnybrook Road

Redevelopment of Broadmeadows Railway Station

Illegal dumping in Hume

Further details can be found on the HCC Advocacy Priorities webpage: Advocacy Priorities – Hume City Council.

Joel also outlined plans to organise a community photo to demonstrate local support for the Somerton Road duplication advocacy campaign. This will take place this Monday evening, and community participation is strongly encouraged.

Please feel free to share this invitation widely so we can show all political parties how important investment in this road is for our community.

The GRA has met with Hume City Council recently and discussed the important advocacy campaigns that they have prioritised for the city of Hume.

In total there are six advocacy campaigns for the upgrade of Broadmeadows train station, illegal waste dumping and the duplication of Sunbury, Donnybrook, Mickleham and Somerton Roads.

The GRA is supportive of them all, however, there are two campaigns that the GRA has been proactively advocating for since 2018 which are the FULL duplication of Mickleham and Somerton Roads.

Duplication of Somerton Road business case has been completed, but the state government has not confirmed funding for its duplication. Please email Iwan Walters MP to ask for funding to be allocated [email protected]

Stage 1 of Mickleham Road is completed, Stage 2 has funding allocated at $250M, however, the next stage from Craigieburn Road to Donnybrook Road has not been funded. Again, please email Iwan Walters MP to ask for funding to be allocated [email protected]

Visit the Hume City Council website and subscribe to join the campaign and information:

The Hume community needs full duplication of Mickleham Road from Craigieburn Road to Donnybrook Road, to ensure the road can meet the needs of a rapidly growing population.

At the GRA meeting held last night BMD and MRPV informed us that all going well the southern lanes will be opened up on Mickleham Road and the Mickleham/Somerton Road roundabout will disappear by Tuesday morning next week. The signalised traffic lights will be activated.

This is fantastic news 👏

Iwan Walters MP advised that road resurfacing works will start soon between Kirkham Drive and Roxburgh Park Drive along Somerton Road as this section has deteriorated.

GRA received an update on Stage 1 Mickleham Road Project from MRPV.

Stage 1

Below is a summary of the major works taking place between now and the end of the year.

We’re upgrading the intersection at Blossom Drive and Somerton Road to improve safety and traffic flow. This involves relocating and protecting water and drainage services, building new medians and kerbs, asphalting and line marking. The intersection is closed until late October. When the works are complete, right turns out of Blossom Dive will be restricted, meaning to head west on Somerton Road from Blossom Drive, drivers will need to turn left and complete a U-turn at the new traffic lights at Mickleham Road. These new access arrangements have been designed to comply with Department of Transport and Planning’s (DTP’s) policies. Essentially, when we add new lanes to main roads, we need to restrict where cars can turn right across multiple lanes out of side roads. This change is designed to increase safety by preventing drivers attempting risky and uncontrolled movements. It also improves traffic flow by directing drivers to designated intersections.

From early October until late November we’ll be doing nightworks (6pm-5am, Sundays to Thursdays) to remove the existing road surface and lay the new asphalt and wearing course (final asphalt layer) on Mickleham and Somerton roads. There will be some overnight lane and side road closures while these works take place, and additional delays expected. Once these works are complete, all new lanes on Mickleham and Somerton Roads will be open to traffic, which is when we expect people to really start benefitting from the upgrade.

We’ll also upgrade the intersection at Hillview Road, including drainage, new medians and kerbs, asphalting and line marking. There will be traffic changes at the intersection while these works take place. We’ll provide more information about these works once the timing has been confirmed.
