There's often a person who influences the course of our lives.
For me, it was a man called John Coates. He was a chemical engineer and I shadowed him for five days in 1982.
After that week at ICI's (now Orica) chlorine plant in the now gentrified suburb of Yarraville in Melbourne, I decided that chemical engineering was for me.
I don't know whether John is still alive, but he left an indelible mark on my career path for which I am eternally grateful.
It was such an industrial environment assaulting all the senses.
Gases and vapours, the grind of machinery, intricate pipework and a brain in the form of automated process control.
Underlying it all, the chemical processes and the complex interplay between mathematics and the physical sconces.
I loved it because it was so hard and complex.
It felt like an intellectual mountain in front of me that I needed to climb and prove my worthiness.
In a working week, one man changed the life of a pimply 16-year-old Melbourne High School student.
That’s how powerful these intersections in life can be.
Chemical engineering has given me so much in life - and set me up for the rest of it.
The registration of my car in South Australia CHEMENG reminds me of that every day and as a nod to John Coates the man who started it all.

Engineers always need a datum, a baseline on which to base their calculations.
Same when it comes to ethics.
Unless you know when your behaviour or conduct is departing from lawful, accepted and moral standards, you could quickly find yourself in quicksand!
Even better when it’s a thoroughly researched, well-worded, codified code that you can keep in your backpack, briefcase, desk drawer - or smartphone.
Fortunately for you, Engineers Australia has produced a Code of Ethics and Guidelines on Professional Conduct.
It’s THE Code of Ethics and Guidelines on Professional Conduct if you’re practicing in Australia.
It defines the values and principles that shape the decisions made and provides a framework for members of Engineers Australia to use when exercising their judgment.
But just remember, the value is in its use.
If you don’t use it, you will lose it!
And when it comes to ethics, if you lose it, you might never get it back.
Download it at www.engineersaustralia.org.au/publications/code-ethics and put a solid foundation under your decision-making.

The job market is hot right now for engineers.
But that doesn't mean you can just walk into your DREAM job.
There are lots of students and engineers but never as many dream jobs to go around.
That's why you need to be smarter and start sooner.
Here are a few things to keep front of mind.

In 1980, as a year 9 student, at a kitchen table in a house that still stands in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, this guy showed me how to expand my first binomial.
You know, (a+2)(a-3)...
I was struggling to grasp the concept but after that little bit of tuition, one-on-one, side-by-side, father-to-son, free from judgment and expectation, I was away.
I’ve never looked back.
But in that moment, he did a whole lot more. He helped me to understand and that’s made all the difference.
Chemical engineering has given me so much in my life but this is the guy who gave me everything, and still does.
Happy Father’s Day dad.

SVAU - Vietnamese Students in Australia
We're reaching out to see if we can help the Vietnamese and international student community here in Australia - or disconnected in Vietnam - during a difficult and distressing time.
As senior industry executives (and engineers) in Australia, we develop and post content to help students and young professionals get started and accelerate their professional careers.
There's already a 10-part How to Find a Job series but please let us know if there's any other content we can rapidly develop - or industry advice we can provide - that would assist Vietnamese students.
We have personally mentored Vietnamese students at The University of Adelaide and can easily scale our advice for the benefit of all students in and planning their return to Australia
We look forward to a full resumption of educational opportunities between our countries and playing our part to strengthen the relationship between students and industry.
