🌕🇯🇵 Japanese Trivia: Can You Eat Thousands of Dango?!
Do you want to eat thousands of dango? 🍡
If you’re thinking about your health, you might regret that decision…!
But in Japan, there is a special day when you have a pretty good excuse to enjoy dango!
It’s called Jūgoya (十五夜), also known as Tsukimi (月見) — the night of the full moon on the 15th day of the eighth month of the traditional lunar calendar. 🌕
On this day, people traditionally admire the beautiful full moon and give thanks for the harvest while praying for good health and happiness. 🙏✨
And of course… we have Dango! 🍡
Moon-viewing dango are often offered to the moon as a traditional offering.
The number of dango varies depending on the region and family, but 15 dango are sometimes used because of the connection with the 15th day of the month.
And these days, there are so many delicious types of dango!
🍡 Mitarashi Dango
🍡 Kinako Dango
🍡 Anko Dango
…and many more!
So, if you ever need an excuse to eat lots of dango…
Jūgoya might be the perfect day! 😂🍡
You can enjoy your favorite dango, admire the beautiful moon, and wish for a healthy and happy future. 🌕❤️
Enjoy Jūgoya! 🇯🇵✨

🇯🇵 🇦🇺Japanese Trivia: Obon Edition! 🍆🥒
Have you ever seen these vegetables arranged like this?
They might look like some kind of unusual furniture 😂
But actually, they have a special meaning in Japan!
In many parts of Japan, Obon (お盆) is observed from August 13 to 16.

During Obon, Japanese people traditionally believe that the spirits of their ancestors return to this world to visit their families. 🇯🇵

So, what do these vegetables mean?
🥒 Cucumber = Horse
🍆 Eggplant = Cow
These are called shōryō-uma (精霊馬) and shōryō-ushi (精霊牛).
The vegetables are shaped like animals that can carry the spirits of ancestors.

🐎 Why a horse?
Horses are fast, so the horse is traditionally said to help ancestors return home quickly!

🐄 Why a cow?
The cow is slow, so it is traditionally said to help ancestors slowly return to the afterlife, taking their time to enjoy the scenery of this world.

Pretty interesting, right? 😁
And here’s another interesting fact!
You might think these vegetables are meant to be eaten after Obon…

But traditionally, they are used as offerings, and how they are handled afterward varies by region and family. So don’t just eat them without asking! 😂

If you’d like to try a traditional Japanese food associated with offerings, why not try Mitarashi Dango (みたらし団子)? 🍡

Dango and other foods may be offered to ancestors during Obon, although customs vary from region to region and family to family.

Mitarashi Dango is sweet, with a delicious sweet-and-salty soy sauce glaze! 🤤

And don’t worry about eating food that has been offered!

In Japanese culture, sharing offerings after they have been presented to ancestors can be seen as a way of sharing food with them. ❤️
So, if you’re interested in Japanese culture during Obon, why not try some Mitarashi Dango?
🍡 Instead of eating the horse and the cow! 😂

Have a nice Obon weekend🥒

🇯🇵🇦🇺 Japanese Trivia!
🍂 Autumn has already begun in Japan… according to the calendar!
Did you know that August has an old Japanese name?
It’s called “Hazuki (葉月)”!

🌿 Ha (葉) means “leaf”
🌙 Tsuki (月) means “month” or “moon”

One popular theory is that Hazuki refers to the season when leaves begin to fall.

And according to the traditional Japanese calendar, Risshū (立秋) — the beginning of autumn — usually falls around August 7th.

So… autumn has already begun! 🍂🇯🇵
But don’t be fooled! 😂
Even though it’s technically autumn, August in Japan is still very hot and humid. 🥵

Planning to visit Japan? Keep that in mind!
And if you’re planning a trip to Japan, JAPANEASY offers Japanese classes focused on practical travel conversation! ✈️🇯🇵
Everyone is welcome — all ages, nationalities, and levels!
Come learn Japanese and discover more about Japanese culture with us! ❤️
Have a great winter! :)
