Lunch, learning and lots of blobs, bugs and slugs. 🍱🐌

Australia is home to some amazing fossil animals, ranging from the very recent to the incredibly ancient. In the heart of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, the rocks preserve some of the earliest evidence of animal life on our planet.

What can these strange early "blobs, bugs, and slugs" tell us about the evolution of animals? How do scientists reconstruct ancient environments from the fossil record?

For our latest lunchtime STEM Snippet session, we were delighted to welcome Alyssa Fjeld from the School of Biological Sciences, Monash University, who shared insights into her fascinating research. Alyssa is a US PhD candidate studying palaeobiology at Monash University. She specialises in early Cambrian invertebrates and is passionate about uncovering Earth's earliest animal ecosystems.

Alyssa's presentation had strong links to both Biology and VCE Environmental Science, making it a fantastic learning opportunity for our students. How lucky they are to hear directly from a researcher working at the forefront of this exciting field.

👏🎼👩‍🎨Celebrating the diverse talents of our students beyond the classroom.

Earlier this month, our students presented "An Air of Impressionism", a student-led showcase inspired by the beauty and imagination of French Impressionism. The event featured an exhibition of original student artworks, a mural inviting visitors to contribute, and a music concert celebrating the music of renowned French composers.

What made this event especially remarkable was that it was planned and led by our student leaders, with everything from artwork curation to the music programm made possible through the dedication and collaboration of our talented students.

It was a wonderful celebration of creativity, teamwork and JMSS student talent. Congratulations to all of our artists, musicians and student leaders who helped bring this inspiring event to life.🥰

Thank you to the Australian Academy of Science and Swinburne University of Technology for having us. Our students had an amazing time exploring 3D printing, experiencing the A320 flight simulator, dancing with a robot, and much more.

Our students had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Karelle Siellez from the University of Tasmania last week.

An astrophysicist, lecturer, and specialist in multi-messenger astronomy, Dr. Siellez contributed to the first detection of a gamma-ray burst and gravitational waves from the same cosmic event, a groundbreaking achievement recognised with the 2017 Breakthrough Prize.

Dr. Siellez shared insights into her research and discussed the challenges and opportunities facing students pursuing STEM education. We are incredibly grateful to VicPhysics Teachers' Network for facilitating this inspiring event and providing our students with the opportunity to learn from a leading scientist and science communicator.
