As we celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day we wanted to say Ngun godjin- Thank You to amazing First Nations Author’s who have inspired us! Indigenous Literacy Foundation

These Aboriginal children’s books build a sense of strength and pride in Culture as they share themes of ‘Country Is Our Teacher’.

For thousands and thousands of years Ancient Aboriginal Ceremonial Stories have been performed through song and dance whereby Elders passed on their vital Cultural Knowledge to children and youth!

These contemporary Aboriginal Storytellers have such an incredible impact on families and communities today.

Aboriginal pedagogies are at the centre of their books and we learn so much through topics that connect us to Land, Waterways and Sky Country. Teachings of Aboriginal Seasons, Aboriginal Languages and Blak Pride are at the forefront of their creative expression!

REST IN POWER DOLLY PARTON

From humble beginnings in Tennessee to taking her place on the world stage, Dolly paved the way for dreamers everywhere with her groundbreaking lyricism, love for country music and her steadfast commitment to making the world a better place.

As the daughter of a working-class father who never learnt to read and write, Dolly knew the transformative power of education. Her program Imagination Library has given children around the world access to books for free, making reading fun and accessible.

Working with local councils and community groups in Australia the program has delivered more than 2 million books to children across the country including remote and regional areas.

This year, Australia’s Imagination Library has championed First Nations authors and illustrators including ‘Yurri's Birthday’ written by Yorta Yorta author Sue Atkinson and illustrated by Taungurung woman Annette Sax, and Counting with Country, written and illustrated by Annette Sax, published by Yarn Strong Sista .

Thank you Dolly for your deadly contributions to children's literacy here in Australia and for profiling First Nations books.

Marley and I came across this amazing structure while walking on Wurundjeri lands this afternoon.

For First people’s of the Kulin Nation, this shelter is known as Wilam in Woiwurrung language & Yilam in Taungurung language.
Yorta Yorta people say Manung for a bark shelter…. Maybe you know the Aboriginal children’s book by Aunty Sue Atkinson called Yurri’s Manung?!

Today’s beautiful surprise left me wondering who had created such a wonderful ‘home’.

Early Childhood Centres visit this bush land that is made up of unique red river gums and over time I have seen variety of stunning shelters that have been carefully and respectfully constructed.

Educators and Teachers will soon have access to a great new VEYLDF resource being developed by the amazing team at the Department of Education Victoria!

Aboriginal Dancer & Musician Brent Watkins from Brent Watkins had us mesmerised as he shared the spirit of his Old People through Traditional & Contemporary Dance.

Ngun godjin to Brent for sharing your cultural knowledge with us Mob, so heart felt. An honour to see you perform the Bogong Moth Ceremony Dance, which was a beautiful & spiritual moment.

Such a privilege to be present at the NAIDOC celebrations of the Aboriginal Gathering Place, South Morang last Friday!

Congratulations to all First Nations Deadly Team who did such a great job of making this gathering an amazingly special event. City of Whittlesea

Beautiful memories from 2003 NAIDOC MARCH!

This is the banner I painted when Mani was 6 weeks old & Iluka 3 ½ years old!

The NAIDOC theme 23 YEARS AGO was “OUR CHILDREN OUR FUTURE”

Within the waterhole symbol, the words
“GROWIN’ UP STRONG…. LEARNING FROM OUR ELDERS” are central!

Mani & Iluka’s little foot prints symbolise them walking proudly in culture and strong in their identities. Walking in the foot steps of their Old People, our Ancestors.

As we begin this NAIDOC WEEK 2026 we are thinking of and want to honour tge strength and leadership of Aboriginal Freedom Fighters, the men and women who fought for the rights of our Mobs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.

Acknowledging the original Day of Mourning, the beginning of NAIDOC - National Aboriginal & Islander Observance Committee. Knowing of the conception and history of NAIDOC and the incredible 50 years, the path that has lead us to NAIDOC WEEK as we know it today!

Wishing all our BIG MOBS a fantastic NAIDOC 2026 Celebrating 50 YEARS OF DEADLY! Such an amazing accomplishment!
