Dragons of the Spectrum (DOTS) – where imagination meets real-world skill building

At Affirming Care Services, our Dragons of the Spectrum (DOTS) program is so much more than a game.

DOTS is a story-based social learning group for children aged 10+. Built around a simplified tabletop role-playing adventure, it blends targeted social-emotional learning with collaborative fantasy in a safe, neuro-affirming space.

Across 10 weekly sessions, participants create their own characters and form a party adventurers. Together they explore new worlds, solve challenges, face dragons, and practise meaningful social skills in the process. Skills like emotional awareness, teamwork, communication, perspective-taking, and flexible problem solving are woven directly into the story.

In DOTS, young people can:
• explore social roles at their own pace
• build confidence through creativity
• connect with peers in a structured yet flexible setting
• practise new skills without pressure or judgement

We currently have places available in our DOTS groups running from our Yarraville office.

The ABC recently published this excellent article exploring the therapeutic benefits of DOTS. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-02-11/dungeons-and-dragons-inspired-game-for-neurodivergent-kids/106321560

Our LEGO groups are set to kick off for 2026 very soon! Contact us via email to book a place for term 1! 👉 [email protected]

Our LEGO group programs are structured, play-based programs where children work together on collaborative LEGO challenges. Through hands-on building, participants practise turn-taking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication in ways that feel natural and low pressure.

LEGO groups are especially helpful for autistic, ADHD, and neurodivergent children who engage best through interest-based, tactile activities. The shared focus of building reduces social pressure and supports connection to develop organically.

We use a mix of structured builds and open-ended creative challenges, supporting executive functioning, flexibility, confidence, and emotional regulation. Children are supported to participate in ways that suit their communication style and sensory needs, without forcing eye contact, scripted conversations, or compliance.

Our LEGO groups run in 10-week terms at our Yarraville office.

About Minecraft at ACS ...
Our Minecraft groups use a shared digital world to support collaboration, problem-solving, communication, and emotional regulation in a way that feels familiar and engaging.

Minecraft provides a predictable structure with space for creativity, making it particularly supportive for autistic, ADHD, and neurodivergent children who connect through digital or interest-based environments. Working together in-game reduces social pressure while still creating meaningful opportunities for teamwork and connection.

Facilitators support cooperative play, negotiation, flexibility, and managing frustration as challenges arise. Children can participate at their own pace, communicate in ways that feel comfortable, and build confidence through shared goals.

Our Minecraft groups run in 10-week terms at our Yarraville office.

The structure of the game provides predictability, while the narrative allows creativity, flexibility, and exploration of different perspectives.

DOTS is particularly supportive for autistic, ADHD, and neurodivergent children who enjoy imaginative play, strategy, and clear systems. Social interaction happens naturally through the game, without pressure to perform or conform.
