WHAT IS STAGE 1?

Stage 1 is where every student begins.

Short questions, fast answers, and a lot of repetition.

I speak quickly on purpose. You answer in full sentences, I correct you on the spot, and you say it again properly.

No long pause to think it through first.

WHY THE SPEED MATTERS

That pace is the point.

It builds the reflex to speak without translating in your head, which is the thing most textbooks never get you to.

If you've studied English for years and still freeze when someone asks you a simple question, this is the part that
fixes it.

This is me with Antoine and Elora from France. We went to a really cool Brunswick bar, Howler, where I made them a deal: I would grab their drinks, but they had to order in English.

They learnt how to order a Heaps Normal, which is an Australian non alcoholic beer, and we explored the word heaps. It is not exactly slang, but it is a very common informal Australian way of saying a lot or very.

Heaps Normal is a clever Aussie brand name that means very normal. It is also a great example of how Australians use local language in the names of their businesses.

We learnt how to order a cider, the difference between a pot and a pint, and how to order a lemon, lime and bitters.

We also talked about how their lives are going in Melbourne, including work, finding new places to live and speaking with locals. Along the way, we practised all the useful verbs, phrases, nouns and past tense forms that came up naturally.

We recorded the class and had a really cool, chilled lesson.

Remember, ACE is very different. Think of us as the fun friend you can hang out with while actually learning English in fun, different settings, not only inside the classroom.

Gill and Peggy are two of our students from Taiwan. In this clip they're working on the S at the end of "it's".

It stays soft. Push it too hard and it turns into a Z, which is enough to make a whole sentence sound off. Small thing, but it shows up in almost everything you say, so it's worth the drill.

Both were great to teach and happy for us to film the session so others could use it.

This message genuinely made our day ❤️

One of our wonderful ACE students recently completed his first Humanities test at school and received 69%.

Even more importantly, he wrote her answers in English without using Google Translate. She trusted herself and did it independently.

He wrote to us:

The number one thing is to make sure your resume and cover letter fully and accurately reflect who you are.

There is a brutal truth in there too. When companies are hiring, they want to know that English will not be a problem and that your visa is sorted. I do not agree with it, but it is worth knowing so you can prepare for it.

Get those things in order, learn about the culture, how things work here and your industry, and let the application show who you really are.

If you learned English from a textbook, you probably say "Do you take the train to work?"
Nothing wrong with it. You'll just notice Australians saying something shorter.

The transport becomes the verb:

Train it to
Tramming it to school
Tramming it home
Training it home
Bussing it home

And in questions:

Are you training it to the footy?
Do you train it in or drive?

PT is what we call public transport, so you'll also hear "Do you take PT?"
