What a celebration of stories, creativity and inspiration!

Book Week was celebrated as part of MLC's Festival of Stories, with students from across the College immersing themselves in literature, imagination and creative expression.

Acclaimed authors including Alice Pung, Sarah Speedie and Emma Gourie shared their experiences with students and the wider MLC community, offering valuable insights into the art and power of storytelling.

Among the many highlights, our Senior School students took part in a songwriting showcase inspired by this year's Symphony of Stories theme, while students and staff alike embraced the joy of dressing up as their favourite book characters.

“Reading nurtures imagination, empathy, and critical thinking,” says Inger Krueger, Director of MLC Libraries.

Book Week at MLC is celebrated as part of the whole College Festival of Stories, hosted by MLC Libraries. This year we are celebrating the theme ‘Symphony of Stories’ by bringing together students, families, alumnae, staff and authors in a shared appreciation of reading and storytelling.

At MLC, students are encouraged to explore the issues that matter to them, develop their perspectives and communicate their ideas with clarity and conviction.

Through the Kew Future Leaders Speech Competition, students had the opportunity to strengthen their public speaking skills, deepen their understanding of civic engagement and experience the power of using their voice to create positive change.

We are proud of all students who participated, demonstrating confidence, courage and a commitment to making a difference in their communities. Congratulations to our finalists as they progress to the next stage.

From mixing bouncy slime at the Chemistry Carnival to exploring the weird and wonderful world of Spooky Science, our Junior School families discovered that curiosity is at the heart of every great scientific adventure.

Students and their families immersed themselves in an evening of hands-on discovery, with interactive experiences designed to spark wonder and encourage exploration.

At MLC, curiosity, investigation and experimentation are woven into learning from the earliest years. Experiences like Family Science Night encourage students to ask questions, test ideas and discover that science is not just something learned in the classroom, but a way of understanding and engaging with the world.

That’s a wrap on MLC’s High School Musical Jr. production!

We couldn’t be prouder of the Junior Secondary School students who brought the show to life. More than 100 students were truly ‘all in this together’, contributing across every aspect of the production, from cast and backstage crews to technical production, hair and makeup, and costumes.

Reflecting on the collaboration, dedication and creativity behind the lively musical, Dramatic Arts Director Dana Duncan said: “Drama has the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, excite the imagination and encourage students to reach their creative and expressive potential.”

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who helped make the production such a success and a memorable experience for all involved.

"If we can make learning come to life, that's what's really exciting."

When MLC alumna Sophia Lazarou (2004) returned to share her story as a Qantas First Officer, students gained valuable insights into leadership, change and how communication and collaboration underpin high-performing teams.

Alongside Helena Chesworth, Qantas Captain, she helped bring classroom learning to life through real-world industry experience and inspiring perspectives on career pathways.

By engaging with industry leaders and role models, students can see where their learning can lead and gain the confidence to explore their own path.

Creativity, collaboration and critical thinking: That's what MLC students in Years 8-10 put into action at the National Science and Engineering Challenge at Deakin University.

Throughout the day, students developed solutions that required experimenting with aerodynamics, electricity grids, optical fibre transmissions, building structures and fish traps.

MLC was declared the highest-scoring school of the day, securing a well-deserved win at their regional event.

Alongside the overall victory, the MLC team received special recognition for placing first in The Grab Lab, a brand-new Challenge category for 2026 that required students to design and construct a mechanical hand.

Congratulations to all the students who took part, and to the staff who supported them in this outstanding achievement.
