As of May 2026, the hacking group ShinyHunters has claimed a major data breach involving Instructure, the company behind the widely used Canvas learning management system, potentially compromising data for staff and students across Australian universities and 9,000 global institutions.
Impacted Systems: The breach affects Canvas, the primary learning management system for many Australian universities, schools, and TAFEs, with the Queensland Education Department confirming its QLearn platform was impacted.
Data Involved: The breach reportedly involves sensitive personal information of students and staff, creating risks of personalized phishing attacks and data extortion.
Extortion Threat: ShinyHunters claimed responsibility around May 1, 2026, posting data on a dark-web leak site and threatening to leak information if a ransom was not paid by May 6, 2026.
Ongoing Situation: While Instructure stated the incident was "resolved" by May 6, universities and educational authorities are still working to determine the full extent of the impact on Australian users.

Service Disruption Update – Website & Email.
Dear Valued Clients,
We would like to inform you that our website and email services are currently unavailable due to a security incident affecting our hosting provider’s server environment.
The incident has been linked to a recently disclosed cPanel vulnerability (CVE-2026-41940), which allowed unauthorised access at the server level. As part of their containment measures, the hosting provider has taken the affected server offline and decommissioned it.
As a result:
- Our website is intermittently offline.
- Our email accounts are currently not accessible
- Some recent website data and updates may not be available
A new, more secure server environment is currently being provisioned with enhanced protections, and we are working to restore services as soon as possible.
At this stage, there is no confirmed evidence of misuse of client data. However, as a precaution, we advise clients to disregard any unexpected or suspicious emails claiming to be from us until our systems are fully restored.
For urgent matters, please contact us via WhatsApp.
We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding. Further updates will be provided as restoration progresses.

The new student cap.
National Planning Level limits will apply from 1 January 2025, with a total of 270,000 new international student commencements for the 2025 calendar year. This does not include enrolments or offers. It is the actual number of international students starting a course. If a student starts a second course at the same provider, also in calendar year 2025, it will not be counted under that year’s planning limit.
From 1 January 2025, new commencements will be divided between Higher Education and VET:
Public universities will have a total of around 145,000 commencements.
Private universities and NUHEPs will have around 30,000.
VET providers will have around 95,000.
Key Impacts of the NPL Cap for 2025:
Increased Competition: With a limited number of places available, competition for student visas, especially in popular courses and universities, is likely to increase significantly.
Stricter Admission Criteria: Universities and educational institutions may raise their admission standards to ensure they select the most qualified students within the limited quota.
Earlier Application Deadlines: Due to increased competition, it's advisable for prospective students to apply well in advance to secure their places.
