What a beautiful example of being honest, realising that sometimes we focus *too much* on behavior and discipline that we miss the connection underneath… and not being afraid to course-correct by Jason Lewis

It’s trust that is the long game.

Consequences still have a place. A child doesn’t get to skip accountability.

But if the goal is a child who still listens years from now, when they’re grown and you can no longer make them do anything, fear isn’t what will carry that. Something deeper has to connect your voice to their choices.

That something is love, trust and unconditional positive regard. The knowledge that no consequence, however necessary, will ever outweigh the love in the relationship.

Here’s a lovely idea here: a happy childhood doesn’t necessarily look like a happy child 24/7.

One of the biggest misconceptions about happy kids?

We think they should look happy all the time.

Smiling. Cooperative. Easygoing. Grateful.

But a child who feels deeply safe with you may also…

Daydream instead of rushing to the next thing.

Be gloriously, ridiculously silly.

Disagree with you.

Tell you when something feels unfair.

Cry enormous tears over something that seems tiny to you.

And yes… occasionally yell, “I HATE YOU!” because you committed the unforgivable crime of turning off Bluey. 😅

None of these things, on their own, prove a child is happy or securely attached.

But this is the bigger idea:

Emotional health isn’t the absence of difficult emotions.

It’s having enough safety to experience the whole range of them.

We don’t need to raise children who are permanently cheerful.

We want children who know:

I can be myself here.

I can have feelings here.

I can disagree and still belong.

I can mess up and still be loved.

I don’t have to perform happiness to be accepted.

Because maybe the goal of childhood was never “be happy all the time.”

Maybe it’s something much bigger:

Feel safe. Feel loved. Feel free to become who you are. ❤️

Save this for the next time your very “happy” child is sobbing because you cut their toast the wrong way. 😅

Send this to another amazing parent!

The most powerful parenting tool isn’t a reward chart. It isn’t a consequence. It isn’t the perfect script.

It’s your calm.

Watch what happens here.

The kitten is frightened. Its nervous system is in survival mode.

The puppy doesn’t bark louder.
It doesn’t panic.
It doesn’t try to force the kitten to calm down.

It stays calm.

And that calm becomes contagious.

Our children are the same.

When they’re overwhelmed, angry, scared or melting down, they’re borrowing our nervous system.

If we meet chaos with chaos…
their brain hears, “We’re not safe.”

If we meet chaos with calm…
their brain begins to feel, “Maybe I’m okay.”

This doesn’t mean you have to be calm every second of every day.

No parent is.

But every time you practise regulating yourself first, you’re teaching your child something far more valuable than obedience.

You’re teaching them how to regulate themselves.

Children don’t just learn from what we say.

They learn from the nervous system we bring into the room.

❤️ If this resonated, save it for the next time parenting feels hard.

Sometimes the words we say a thousand times are the ones they remember forever.

So here’s a list of one-liners I’ve been trying to say on repeat. The kind that (hopefully) become her inner voice one day.

Save this. Share it. Say them while you’re brushing their hair, driving to school, or tucking them in.

Because they’re listening…💛

“How was school?” asks your child to summarise six hours.

These four questions make it much easier for them to open up. 💛

We love this 🫶

What a beautiful example of humility, insight, accountability, repair and ongoing growth by this father. Jason Lewis

When you grow up around anger, your nervous system doesn’t just forget.

It learns.

If small problems regularly became explosive reactions in your childhood, your brain starts to expect danger—even when there isn’t any.

That’s why many parents find themselves reacting far more intensely than the situation actually calls for.

A child spills a drink.

They ignore a request.

They argue over putting on shoes.

Objectively, it’s a small moment.

But your nervous system isn’t responding to today’s event.

It’s responding to years of yesterday’s experiences.

The good news is this:

Patterns aren’t destiny.

Every time you notice your reaction, pause, repair after you lose your temper, or choose a calmer response than you would have before, you’re teaching your brain something new.

Progress doesn’t mean never getting angry.

It means the storms become less frequent, less intense, and shorter.

Children don’t need perfect parents.

They need parents who are willing to face their own storms instead of passing them on.

Healing isn’t about pretending the storm isn’t there.

It’s about learning to walk through it differently.
