🔬✨ Science Week at Kinder! ✨🔬

Our 4-year-old groups had an exciting excursion to Twisted Science, where they explored, experimented and discovered just how much fun science can be! 🧪

Back at kinder, everyone has been getting involved in Science Week, asking questions, making predictions, experimenting and discovering how things work. We’ve loved seeing our little scientists’ curiosity and excitement in action! 🌟🔍

🚲🛑 Road & Bike Safety at Kinder! 🛑🚲

A big thank you to Tara from Kingston City Council’s Road and Bike Safety Team for visiting our kindergarten and sharing such valuable road and bike safety information with the children.

Through engaging discussions and hands-on learning experiences, the children learnt about:
🚦 Different types of pedestrian crossings and how crossing supervisors help keep us safe
🚶 How to safely cross the road
🛑 Stopping, looking, listening and thinking before crossing
🚲 The importance of wearing a correctly fitted helmet
👀 Being aware of cars, driveways and other road users
🤝 Ways to keep themselves and others safe when walking, riding and travelling in the community

These important safety messages help children build the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to make safe choices both now and as they grow.

💡 Did you know? An adult seatbelt is designed for people who are at least 145cm tall. Most children don’t reach this height until they are around 10–12 years old, which is why many children need to continue using a child seat/booster seat for longer than families might expect.

Thank you again, Tara, for helping our children learn how to stay safe on our roads and pathways! 🚲🚸

🪵Did you know we have Prickly Stick Insects at Chelsea Heights Kindergarten? 🌿

Our stick insects have become a much-loved part of our kindergarten community, and we’re excited to be caring for our third generation!

One of the most special parts of this experience is that children have the opportunity to take our stick insects home during the holidays to care for them before returning them to kinder. This shared responsibility helps children develop empathy, responsibility and respect for living things, while creating a wonderful connection between home and kinder.

Watching our stick insects grow is fascinating! Children can observe their entire life cycle, from tiny eggs, to babies, to adults. They also shed their skin 5–6 times while growing. They even sway gently from side to side, just like leaves in the wind, helping them camouflage in their natural environment.

Here are some amazing facts about prickly stick insects:
🪵 They can live for up to 18 months.
🥚 Females can lay thousands of eggs during their lifetime.
🌿 Females don’t need a male to lay fertile eggs, those eggs will all hatch as females! If they mate with a male, the eggs can hatch into both females and males.
🪽 Male prickly stick insects have wings and typically live for 6–8 months.
🍃 They love fresh eucalyptus leaves, which we replace each week, and they drink tiny droplets of water from the leaves. Their enclosure is gently misted each day to keep them healthy and happy.

Having stick insects at kinder encourages children to slow down, observe closely, ask questions, and care for another living thing.

🏥 Our Dramatic Play Space has transformed into a hospital! 🩺

Our children have been invited into a thoughtfully designed medical centre where they can explore, investigate and make meaning of the world through imaginative play.

Using authentic resources such as X-rays, ultrasounds and medical equipment, children are taking on the roles of doctors, nurses, paramedics, receptionists and patients. Through this child-led play, they are developing a strong sense of identity, building relationships through collaboration and negotiation, and becoming confident and involved learners.

By engaging in meaningful play experiences, children are making connections between their own lives and the wider community while developing empathy, resilience and an understanding of how people help to keep us healthy. 🚑🩻
