In early learning, educators must hold an approved qualification to be counted in educator to child ratios. But did you know you can still be counted while you are studying?

If you are enrolled in an ACECQA approved Certificate III, Diploma or Early Childhood Teaching qualification and are progressing with your studies, you are considered actively working towards. This means you can be included in ratio requirements under the National Regulations.

This helps new educators gain real experience while completing their qualification and supports services with strong staffing levels.

At Suzan Johnston, our Certificate III and Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care meet ACECQA requirements and support you to progress confidently through your studies.

Start your journey with a trusted provider that celebrates and supports developing educators.

The Joy and Magic of Being an Early Childhood Educator

There are few careers as rewarding and meaningful as being an early childhood educator. Every day is filled with laughter, learning, and little moments that make a big difference. For those who have completed a child care course at Suzan Johnston Australia, this profession is more than just a job. It is a calling filled with purpose, joy, and endless opportunities to inspire young minds.

A Career Full of Heart

Being an educator means you get to see the world through a child’s eyes, full of wonder, curiosity, and imagination. One minute you might be singing and dancing to a silly song, and the next you are helping a child write their name for the first time. Each milestone, no matter how small, feels monumental because you know your care and encouragement helped make it happen.
In early childhood education, you are not just teaching numbers, colours, or shapes. You are helping to build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. You are laying the foundations for a child’s future success, one joyful moment at a time.

Building Connections That Matter

One of the most special parts of being an educator is the genuine connection you form with children and their families. Every smile, hug, and story shared reminds you how important your role truly is. Families trust educators to nurture their most precious treasure, their child, and that trust builds lasting bonds based on care and respect.
At Suzan Johnston Australia, our students learn the importance of creating warm and respectful partnerships with families, which is a cornerstone of quality child care training.

Creativity Every Day

No two days in early childhood education are ever the same. One day you might be leading a messy art activity, and the next you could be outside exploring nature or hosting a dance party in the playground. Educators have the freedom to be creative and to spark creativity in children. It is a profession where laughter, curiosity, and imagination are part of the daily routine.

Growing Alongside Your Learners

A career in child care is also a journey of personal growth. You will learn new things every day about children, communication, teamwork, and even yourself. Educators develop patience, empathy, and adaptability, becoming lifelong learners who continually seek better ways to support children’s wellbeing and development.
Graduates of our child care courses at Suzan Johnston Australia often say the experience transforms them both personally and professionally. They leave not only as qualified educators but as confident, compassionate individuals ready to make a difference.

Shaping the Future

Perhaps the most rewarding part of being an early childhood educator is knowing that you are shaping the future one child at a time. Long after they have moved on, children will remember your kindness, encouragement, and belief in them. Every positive experience you create becomes a part of who they are.

Turn Your Passion Into a Career

If you are inspired by the idea of making a difference in the lives of young children, there is no better time to start your journey. Enrolling in a child care course at Suzan Johnston Australia will equip you with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to thrive in this meaningful profession.

The Power of Play in Early Childhood Education
When we think of the early years, what image comes to mind?
Children at play.
For someone outside the profession, play may seem like “just fun.” However, as students of Early Childhood Education and Care, you will quickly discover that play is the foundation of all learning. Through play, children explore, experiment, and make sense of the world around them.
Play is Learning
Play is not separate from learning; it is learning.
It helps children develop critical skills such as problem-solving, creativity, social confidence, and emotional regulation.
When a child stacks blocks into a tower, they are exploring balance, gravity, and cause and effect. When they dress up in costumes, they are learning about identity, communication, and imagination. Even a simple game of tag helps children build physical coordination, cooperation, and turn-taking.
Theories That Shape Play-Based Learning
Play is central to Australia’s Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and grounded in the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, and Montessori.
• Piaget believed that children learn best through active exploration.
• Vygotsky showed that play supports social interaction and collaborative learning.
• Montessori highlighted the value of experiential learning and the prepared environment, which many early learning centres use as the foundation for their philosophy and programs.
As a learner undertaking our CHC30121 Certificate III or CHC50125 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, you will explore these theories in depth and connect them to what you observe in real early learning environments.
The Role of the Educator
Play-based learning does not mean allowing children to do whatever they want. Skilled educators are intentional guides who design stimulating environments, ask open-ended questions, and extend learning moments through thoughtful engagement.
For example, if children are pretending to run a café, an educator might introduce menus, pencils, and notepads to encourage early literacy and numeracy. Every small decision is purposeful, helping children learn through joy, curiosity, and discovery.
Linking Study to Practice
Within your early childhood studies at Suzan Johnston Australia, you will explore units such as:
• CHCECE035 Support the Holistic Learning and Development of Children
• CHCECE034 Use an Approved Learning Framework to Guide Practice
Through these units, you will learn how to connect play to developmental outcomes. For instance, children playing with water may be exploring science concepts such as floating and sinking, mathematics through measuring and pouring, and social development through sharing and negotiation.
You will not only study these links but also apply them during your practical placement, observing first-hand how play nurtures every aspect of a child’s growth.
See the World Through a Child’s Eyes
Next time you watch children play, pause and reflect.
What are they learning right now?
How can you extend this learning through your interactions or environment?
Which EYLF outcomes are being demonstrated in this moment?
Play is never “just play.” It is the foundation for every child’s growth, development, and lifelong love of learning.
