Job done for a fella I know
He’s rebuilding a 308 Holden V8 equipped with a supercharger and the new crank shaft needed an extra 3/16 keyway cut into it exactly 180 degrees from the original ones
Set up a precision ground bar across the original keyway and clock it in dead flat then rotate 180 degrees and cut in the new keyway job done
I think the only problem this bloke is going to have now is keeping rear tyres on his Torana 🤭

Job underway at 600 Engineering today
It’s a feed roller for a wood chipper The shaft was in bad shape so cut the end plates and old shaft out and machine up new parts and machine the ends of the drum so the new plates sit down on a shoulder just to keep everything running true and square

Custom jobs come with custom issues to overcome
This one had the old grey matter working a bit
It’s a wrench cradle out of a line boring machine
The slide holes were worn and needed resizing so weld them up and machine them but they are in an arch
So to find a reference point to work from required finding a centre so made a trammel and tacked some steel in place found the centre and then things became easier thanks to the rotary table
Also had to make new pins 1 1/4 inch and bronze bushes to suit
Sure beats the client waiting for expensive parts to come from USA

It still has to have an inlet hole put in the top and when it does it will allow the master cylinder to be mounted under a dashboard and have a remote mounted fluid reservoir

Another odd job done
This is a clamping cradle out of a line boring machine. It clamps hydraulically onto boring pipes to enable adding or removing pipe in the boring operation
It had seen a hard life with one bolt snapped off and attempts made to remove the bolt with no success and another bolt removed but rethreaded far from straight
Drilled out the broken bolt no problem then had to make a thread insert with a 24x2 mm bolt and then thread it to 20x2.5 ( it takes a fare bit of elbow grease to turn a 24mm tap )
Next part of the job entailed welding the slotted guide holes all 4 of them and machining them back to spec as they were badly worn out

Had to bring these W model Kenworth bonnet hinges back up to size
Made these mandrels to bolt the hinge pin to then hold the pin and machine the mandrel so it’s inline with the pin. Next step build up the pin with weld hold the mandrel and machine the pin to size
That had the work holding problem solved next step was a simple re-bush of the hinge mount and job done

Made this small threaded shaft up for a mechanics shop
Their brake lathe stopped working and they found both the threaded shaft and its nut badly worn and no parts available so it came down to make a new one or spend big $$ and buy a new lathe

Job done and finished for 600 engineering at 600 engineering today
Design and build a partition in this tipper to enable dropping 2 loads of 2 cubic metres of firewood at two different locations
600’s client will be putting it to work tomorrow delivering firewood in the Yarra Valley

Reclaiming a couple of axles for a skid steer that had torn the keyways out
It’s an older machine so hard to find new or good axles
Welded up all the damaged sections and a bit more then machine back to correct diameters for both the sprocket and the bearing journal’s then cut in the two new keyways at 135 degrees separation
These jobs are always more time consuming than clients can appreciate but that’s all just part and parcel of the dark magic of getting it done
