The UV index identifies the strength of the sun (UV radiation) from a specific location on a particular day, at a particular time and can be used to calculate a safe amount of time in the sun to obtain Vitamin D.
For most places it is easy to google the UV index at different times of the day every day.
In the US, see https://www.epa.gov/sunsafety/uv-index-1
In Australia, generally between 0-12, can reach 17, see http://www.bom.gov.au/uv/index.shtml
In the UK, maximum 8, see https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/uv-index-forecast
Using the UV index you calculate how long to spend in the sun with all over body exposure (ie not just hands etc)
15 - 20 mins UV index 5 - midday, uncovered
10 - 15 mins UV index 7 - midday, uncovered
5- 7 mins UV index 14 - midday, uncovered
A good approach in the warmer weather, eg at the beach, is to have 10 minutes of exposure then cover up!
