We’re excited to announce a new partnership between Deakin's Institute for Health Transformation and Cancer Australia, dedicated to improving cancer care for rural and remote Australians 👏
The purpose of the partnership is to acknowledge and facilitate the shared responsibility of implementing the Australian Cancer Plan across the cancer control sector. The Institute for Health Transformation’s ECORRA Research Group will lead multiple initiatives, such as co-designing an Optimal Care Pathway implementation package for rural and remote Australia.
The research group will leverage existing partnerships and relationships with health services, consumers and academic partners to deliver on their responsibilities to implement the Optimal Care Pathways to support people with cancer in rural and remote areas.
A big thank you to all those involved in making this partnership a reality. On this World Cancer Day, we’re reminded of the power of collaboration in driving positive change in the fight against cancer.

Today we honour the life of the Hon. Austin Asche AC KC, Deakin University’s second Chancellor, who passed away at 99. As Deakin's Chancellor from 1983 to 1987, Austin’s leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the University during its formative years.

Austin’s contributions extended far beyond Deakin. He served as a senior judge of the Family Court of Australia, Chief Justice of the Northern Territory Supreme Court, and the Northern Territory’s 15th Administrator. We are deeply honoured to announce an extraordinary gift from the late Dr. Lewis and Libby Hughes, alum of Deakin University. Their $1.64 million bequest donation —the largest in our history—will support research, tuition, and more, reflecting their commitment to lifelong learning.
'We believe that the measure of one's life is centred on what you contribute, not about what assets you have,' Lewis said, 'Through supporting educators—both researchers and practitioners—we create ripples of impact that extend far beyond the classroom.'
As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we honour their contributions and their commitment to supporting future generations of learners. Here’s to 50 years of education, growth, and community! 🌟
