Wild Music History: The Concerto for Ice Cream Trucks 🍦
In 2011, composer David B. Dille premiered his "Concerto for Ice Cream Trucks" with the Reno Philharmonic. The piece integrated the iconic, pre-recorded jingles of 12 actual ice cream trucks into a full orchestral score. It celebrated community, nostalgia, and found music in everyday life, proving artistry can be playful and profound.

Find the music in the everyday. We'll help you develop the skills to express it.

The Mozart Effect Debunked 🧠
The "Mozart Effect" – the popular 1990s claim that listening to classical music makes you smarter – has been largely debunked. The original study showed only a temporary, minor boost in spatial reasoning, not overall intelligence. However, actively learning and playing music has proven, long-term benefits for memory, coordination, and cognitive function.

Get the real brain benefits by playing music, not just listening. Start your journey today.

Fun Fact Friday
The Musical Plant
In a bizarre fusion of art and science, artist and researcher Joe Patitucci created Music for Plants in the 1970s, an album specifically composed to stimulate plant growth.

More recently, a 2007 study in South Korea found that plants exposed to certain frequencies (specifically 125 Hz and 250 Hz) showed accelerated genetic expression related to growth. While "plant music" remains quirky, it highlights sound's tangible, vibrational impact on living things—including us.

Feel like your growth as a musician could use a boost? We provide the perfect environment to flourish.

Theory Thursday 🎼
The Backdoor Dominant
Spice up your chord progressions with a smooth, jazzy shortcut: the Backdoor Dominant.

Normally in a major key, you'd use the V chord (like G7) to return home to the I chord (C). The backdoor substitute uses the â™VII7 chord (like Bâ™7) instead. It resolves just as satisfyingly to the I chord but with a cooler, more unexpected sound.

You hear it in jazz standards and modern pop—it’s the sound of taking the scenic route home.

Wisdom Wednesday ✨
"Music is the silence between the notes." – Claude Debussy

The most powerful part of a song isn't always the loudest chord or the highest note. It's the breath, the pause, the moment of anticipation. What feels like emptiness is often full of meaning.

Learn to use space and dynamics to make your music speak volumes. We teach expression, not just notes.

Music Word of the Day: Vibrato

Vibrato (vih-BRAH-toe) is the gentle, pulsating variation of pitch that brings warmth, emotion, and life to a sustained note. It’s not a wobble or a mistake—it’s a controlled oscillation that makes a voice or instrument sound rich, human, and expressive.

You hear it in opera singers’ soaring high notes, the lush tone of a violinist’s bow, and the soulful bends of a blues guitarist’s string. It’s the secret ingredient that turns a plain note into a feeling.

Want to add more expression and colour to your sound? We can teach you the techniques that make music come alive.

Technique Tuesday: Master the Mute
Great guitar tone isn't just about the notes you play—it's about the noise you don't play.

Practice palm muting and left-hand muting to clean up your sound. It turns a messy strum into a tight, professional groove. Start slow, focus on control.

Want a cleaner, more powerful sound? Our guitar teachers focus on the essential techniques that make all the difference.

The First Note: Mindful Monday
Every masterpiece, from a three-minute pop song to a 40-minute symphony, begins with a single note.

This Monday, don't overthink the whole piece. Just focus on that first, clean, intentional note. Build from there. Momentum is everything.

Start your week—and your practice—with intention. We can help you build a practice routine that sticks.

The Hum That Calmed a City
In 2015, the Glasgow Hum — a mysterious, low-frequency sound heard across parts of the city — was investigated by acoustic engineers. While its exact source was debated, studies found that consistent, low-frequency sound can reduce stress and anxiety in listeners. This led some urban planners to explore using deliberate, soothing soundscapes in public spaces to improve wellbeing.

Curious about how sound affects mood? Learn to create your own calming (or energising!) soundscapes with us.

Secondary Dominants – The Quick Journey
Want to add a splash of colour and direction to your chord progressions? Use a Secondary Dominant. It’s simply the dominant (V) chord of any chord in your key other than the tonic.

For example, in the key of C, going to an E major chord (which is the V chord of A minor) before landing on your A minor creates a brief, powerful sense of journey. It’s a classic tool in jazz, Broadway, and pop that makes your music travel.

Want to navigate chord journeys like a pro? Let's map them out together.

Fun Fact Friday: The Universal Lullaby

Research has discovered that parents across the globe, regardless of culture or language, sing lullabies to their infants in almost the exact same way.

These universal lullabies share three key traits: they are slow, use a narrow range of notes, and have a simple, repetitive melody. This "musical baby talk" is instinctively used to soothe, bond, and communicate love—proving that music is a fundamental, pre-linguistic human language. 🧠👶
