Discover Rory’s inspiring story of perseverance and his remarkable journey to success in the roof tiling industry below.

Don't miss our exclusive Q&A with Rory Nicol from RSN Roofing:

Q & A with Rory Nicol - RSN Roofing

It all began more than three decades ago. Rory Nicol, now the proud owner of RSN Roofing, first stepped into the world of roof tiling over 32 years ago when he signed up for an apprenticeship under the guidance of industry veteran Mark Cameron. During those formative years, Rory honed his skills working on roofing repairs and restorations, learning the craft from the ground up.

After completing his apprenticeship, Rory’s ambition led him down a different path—a role as Contracts Manager at Telstra. It was a job of a lifetime, but after two years, something didn’t feel right. Rory realised his true calling was back where it all started: on the rooftops. And so, RSN Roofing was born, more than 20 years ago.

Today, Rory leads a dedicated crew of eight—three apprentices and five qualified tradesmen, including himself. Together, they tackle everything from new roof installations to restorations and repairs, covering a vast area across Geelong and the Barwon regions. The team partners with Bristile and takes on private projects, sourcing new roofs and re-roofs through their own network of builders.

What was it like starting your business?

Launching the business wasn’t an overnight success. It began with subcontracting for another company, then gradually moving into advertising and building a reputation. It took six to eight years to establish a name in the industry—a process driven by high standards in customer service and a commitment to quality.

Growth came naturally, fuelled by opportunities within the sector and a willingness to take the next step. For Rory, the most rewarding part has been the relationships—working closely with builders and clients, sharing mutual respect, and appreciating the value of a job well done. There’s a deep sense of satisfaction when projects are completed on time and clients’ expectations aren’t just met—they’re exceeded.

What were the challenges and barriers at the time?

One of the biggest hurdles was finding the right staff. Balancing the workforce with fluctuating workloads proved difficult—there was never a perfect number. Too few hands meant delays; too many meant inefficiencies.

How did you overcome those challenges?

The solution wasn’t just about hiring—it was about building a culture. Rory focused on open conversations with his team about workplace values and safety. He introduced initiatives like sponsoring the Geelong Harness Club and running footy tipping competitions to foster camaraderie among like-minded people.
For Rory, culture was everything. Drawing on 20 years of experience coaching football, he applied the same principles to his business: teamwork, accountability, and pride in performance. Standards were non-negotiable, and that mindset helped create a workplace where roof tilers take genuine satisfaction in their craft.
What are your thoughts on the future?

Looking ahead, 2025 has been a challenging year—marked by hurdles, obstacles, and rate decreases. Yet, Rory believes that navigating tough times ultimately strengthens a company and its future.

RSN Roofing isn’t just a business—it’s a legacy built on craftsmanship, trust, and a passion for excellence that has stood the test of time.

Partnering for Purpose: A Day with Youth Projects

Last week, we had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by Youth Projects, an organisation that offers a wide range of support services for young people. While they provide many valuable programs, our partnership specifically focuses on their Transition to Work initiative, a program designed to support disengaged youth aged 17–25 who have exited the traditional schooling system.

The event drew about 30 participants - the conversations were meaningful, and the energy was strong!

There were five industries represented at the event, each offering unique career pathways. Our engagement stood out we received five candidate referrals, which was on par with other participating industries. This strong interest highlights that roof tiling is being recognised as a viable and appealing career option among young job seekers.

Out of the five candidates who registered interest with us, one has already been put forward for an interview. The remaining four are pending, as they still need to obtain their White Cards before progressing further.

Overall, the event was a great opportunity to connect with a targeted and motivated cohort, and we’re excited about the potential to support more young people into sustainable employment through our partnership with Youth Projects.
