Happy Lunar New Year!!

3rd year anniversary in Melbourne.

We went to a sky bar to celebrate my 3rd year anniversary in Melbourne. We planned to celebrate it last month; however, I was testing positive to COVID-19 and I spread the virus to my family. Sancho is probably the only one immune to COVID-19. XD

Anyway, I would like to share the view from the sky bar. I never expect that I will stay in Melbourne for more than 3 years. 😃😃😃

After living in Australia, what impacts me the most is the wildlife. I didn’t take any pictures because any noise or flashlight from camera will affect little penguin a lot. They are very timid and will become very hesitated to get on shore. I’m happy to donate them little amount of money by buying one of the tiny penguin dolls. I’m also very happy to download the photos online because I don’t want to see them have a hard time going home. 🏡

New job on-board. I will still update something new occasionally.

在澳洲待久了之後，會很自然而然的接觸一些野生動物，也是因為接觸這些野生動物，而開始會去思考一些環境保育及環境教育的一些內容，為了保護這些動物，很多人開始使用非一次性餐具，這是整個環境下，讓我看到的事。

氣候變遷的議題真的蠻難過的，我相信也不是新聞故意要誇大一些事實而要大眾做一些改變，我也曾經在台北看過一些人或外國人把冷氣開到16度而對人性有一種失望，因為我不相信「好人一定會有好報」這種觀念，而是「天地不仁，以萬物為芻狗」。

台灣、日本、澳洲都各自有各自的環境保護方式，我到現在還是很喜歡日本到處都有電動車，以及塔斯馬尼亞州的船是「吃電的（台語）」 。

Grammatical Pattern - 1

Long time no see. :)

Let’s talk about grammar this time.

I use “no matter how/ what etc.” to make grammar learning more concrete. How I demonstrate this is that I start with meaning first because most grammatical forms usually encompass more than one meaning. Some concept check questions are used to check students’ comprehension in meaning. In terms of forms, students can decode the forms themselves. Pronunciation will be taught if there are some special ways of articulation.

文法的教學方式，要從meaning 開始，至於為什麼要從meaning 開始，則是因為在英文文法中，一個文法句型可能會有一個以上的意思。forms 的部分，學生會自己decode 文法的forms ，發音則是有特殊的發音變化，則會再最後的部分提出來教。

What makes Melbournians so annoyed?

I still remember that the lecturer told us that Melbournians somehow hate “yuppies” the most because everything will become very fancy and expensive. What’s worse, “yuppies” can make housing unaffordable to some people.

We went to an Ethiopian restaurant in Footscray recently. The meal was great. We were so happy with the price and the arrangement of the food.

We try to avoid the food which has placed some flowers or fancy decoration on top because this is gentrification. Gentrification is a dilemma because it makes Melbourne look classy but people have to pay more for what is beyond the food. This is probably the reason why we still prefer the restaurant with poor copywriting and poor photography of food on the menu.

The last two pictures are Ethiopian coffee and Ethiopian food.

有時候，我會覺得Gentrification 似乎是避免不了的事，在墨爾本，這是大家都很怕的事。

還記得一開始在澳洲的時候，有老師跟我們說，只要有yuppies 到的地方，物價、房租、房價就會變貴。

食物的部分，食物上面可能就是多個幾朵花，就可以收很貴的費用。我是小氣鬼，還是喜歡阿嬤開的餐廳，阿嬤不會寫文案寫作，也不會專業攝影，這或許是能在墨爾本享受美食的方式之一。

久しぶり｡

Long time no see.

After reading a bunch of news from Ukraine, I hope that history education, the function of war museums and even the anti-war movies will work.

In this pack, I focus on the main points of anti-war movies since I am not a history teacher or a drama teacher. However, I still remember that my high school history teacher mention “appeasement” this big word. Many western countries eventually paid for the price for this. I saw some friends donate some money to Ukraine embassy or support Ukraine on social media. These motivates me to do a bit like this post.

烏克蘭的新聞看了很難過，希望過去的歷史教育、戰爭博物館及反戰電影能發揮作用。

我簡單的把反戰電影的主要訴求寫出來，我還記得高中歷史老師曾說，二戰是姑息主義的結果，因為二戰以前，很多列強都是在觀看，有人在發戰爭財，但是最後很多列強不得不加入戰局，這樣子的結果也證實「姑息」的代價蠻大的。

我也看到有朋友捐款給烏克蘭大使館，也有在網路上聲援烏克蘭，自己能做些事也是好的！

我寫這個部落格的動機，主要是想要些一些關於英語寫作教學及學習的一些事。內容有分針對準備雅思考試、全名英檢中高級作文及高中生的大學指考英文作文。 我常覺得學習的方法不難，但是有效的教學方法很重要，英文寫作可以運用所謂的順序：腦力激盪、草稿、校對、校稿到最後繳交作文。 這個過程不難，但是寫出好的內容不容易。 好的內容需要清晰的邏輯。在寫出清晰的邏輯的過程中，我們需要統整由大到小的訊息，因為這跟英語語言知識有很大的關係。講到這裡，我們先從主題句topic sentence 開始講。 什麼是clear topic sentence? clear topic sentence 指的是讀者能從一個段落就能快速理解這個段落主要要講什麼，好比說，要清楚的把主要原因列出來來解釋為什麼我們要談「東京是一個很宜居的城市」。我們可以看以下的例子： 1. Tokyo is a livable city. 2. Tokyo is a livable city because everyone can enjoy its convenience. 3. Tokyo is a livable city because people are able to use three subway systems and its bus system per day. 第二句是適合的主題句，因為訊息量告訴讀者，這就是我要談的。 第一句則是太籠統，不僅讀者很難跟得上作者，作者也會寫得很辛苦。 第三句則是太詳細了。這些訊息反而比較適合當作是examples 的部分。 和中文很不一樣的地方就是「不能太貪心」，因為在英文作文寫作中，一個段落只要把一個概念講清楚就可以了。這些可以在雅思、托福的範文中，看到這一塊。 這當然也和有效教學及寫作後的feedback 有關係，也可以說，寫作要進步，真的要一直練習，然後找老師改作文，這樣才能考到期待的成績。 更多資訊/ More Information 請我喝咖啡/ 送我一本書

[Part 3: Feminism in Australia]
Feminism is a very complicated topic. It is often misunderstood because men are afraid of being challenged by women and women are scared of this ideology.

There are many waves in feminism and it’s also interesting to see how the modern society is formed. Greer’s work did inspire me because I don’t think gender should be involved in some discussion, for example, less girls studying science or how to encourage girls to study science. I believe this should be an individual choice and how a female student defines herself.

I would also like to name some examples in the English teaching industry because there are always more women than men. In order to make gender ratio equal, some schools tend to hire male teachers. They even took out some female teachers’ resumes. However, we can question whether this can really effectively change gender equality. We can also think about what gender equality should be.

Greer grew up in the background when Australian society was still dominated by men. Many Australian women have been influenced by her novel, The Women Eu**ch. It is also said that her novel makes Australian women different.

The final picture is Elwood beach, where Greer used to live.

這可能是一篇很晦澀的一篇。
女性主義不僅是一個非常複雜的概念，也常常被誤解，很多男生會以為女性平權的方式就是挑戰男性，而很多女生卻也抗拒這種意識形態。

女性主義大致上有四波，每一波有每一波的訴求，這也是現今社會不可缺乏的一部分。

Greer 認為女性主義是一種從性別中的解放，而非齊頭式平等。Greer 的女性主義論點確實有打動了我，因為我不覺得有些討論是需要從女性角度下去討論，這可能也和我過去身邊的一些女性朋友，唸書的時候一點都不像女生也有關係XD，我後來學語言學之後，就覺得在語言用詞上，可能要以個人現有的條件做討論，而非「讀理科的女生少」。

我其實也想舉一些跟性別有關的例子，在英語教學圈裡面，往往都是女老師多於男老師的狀況，因此有些單位甚至在甄選時，會刻意甄選男老師，而非客觀的選才。有時候我們可能也要想一想，這樣是否可以達到gender equality ？

Greer 的成長背景是在男性主導下的澳洲，許多澳洲女生受到Greer 的影響，解放了自己，這樣讓澳洲人跟其他地區的人有些不同。

最後一張照片是Greer 小時候住家附近的海灘，也是墨爾本最漂亮的海灘之一。

I decided to post this pack again since I think I can make this pack more like language learning by adding extra information and some sentences.

I used CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning) as my lesson planning model. I am sometimes curious about what is teachable in terms of language education. Focusing on language is actually the main challenge of making this pack.

CLIl can overwhelm readers and learners because the content looks scary. However, literary content only provides the contexts. This is why this type of language teaching can effectively support learning. Many studies also support this for the active mental activities from reading and actual language practice.

我決定要再貼一次這篇XD 我很龜毛，覺得教案沒寫清楚的地方就一定要修改一下。

這種教學方式是CLIL ，這種教學方法主要是搭配「語言」和「內容」，簡單來說，就是用英文學某個特定的內容，而內容可以是文學、歷史、甚至是一些科目。有些國家像是日本和西班牙的英語教學採用CLIL的模式，澳洲的維多利亞州的某些學校也是採用這套模式（未來會有個個關於語言教學方式的相關介紹(o^^o))。

有時候學生常常會誤解，以為要額外學習content ，但是語言教育終究還是要回歸到語言教育，理解文化歷史固然重要，但是列出單字、文類等更重要。

薔薇戰爭講的是13世紀的英國內戰，這當中有些單字，常常被用來形容現今社會的運作模式，好比說，社群媒體是現代的kingmaker ，我想川普當選應該是最好的例子，clan 也在雅思閱讀中出現過。

CLIL 也提供所謂的「語境」，很多研究已經表示，如果只是單單學語言，沒有語境，這樣子的狀況是很難學起來的。透過各種閱讀活動，心理層面其實也不停地在運作，這也大大的幫助我們學習語言。所以找任何東西讀吧！英文說明書等都好。

Let’s learn more about reading skills.

Before introducing reading skills, I want to highlight that we do not need to know every word when doing reading practice. Reading skills application and enlarging vocabulary size are two different concepts. We can pick up more vocabulary through reading, but reading skills application is usually used to find particular information.

I still remember when I was doing CELTA in Kobe. I was so amazed at some experienced teachers’ achievements. Many Japanese students learned to use the reading skills to handle the learning tasks in class.

我很多以前的同事很常說，我的學習模式太「跳躍」了，我必須說，我不是資優生，我也很很多英文學習者一樣，過去10年，生活中有許多挫折，坐在書桌前準備一大堆拉拉雜雜的考試。

我寫這篇主要也是自從開始教學以來，一直會面臨到一些問題，很多人會來問我，在閱讀時遇到不會的英文單字怎麼辦？我往往會回答：
1. 知不知道這個「不會的單字」可能沒有那麼重要。
2. 如果考試內容有考這個字可能的意思是什麼，那要學會要從意思去猜測，因為線索就在旁邊。
3. 學語言也不能只停留在單字文法的層面上，要再更進一步，要會學著讀「meaning」。

當然，這些答案並無法滿足每位學生。

這個過程看似簡單，但是實際上執行起來是很難的，因為這和我們的舒適圈有關係，很多人還是會覺得他/她要每個單字都知道，他/她才會比較不會那麼焦慮。

這也讓我想到在CELTA 受訓期間，我好amazed ，看到一些日本阿嬤，每天開心地去上英文課，學著走出舒適圈，每天開心的walk off with something 。阿嬤都能做到了，我想我們多練習一下也行吧（？！）

我知道我寫這篇未必是一個非常welcome 的概念，但是我會建議原來的方法已經打死結了或著是已經事倍功半了，那何妨不試試看呢？
