Exploring, imagining, and experimenting — all in a day's play 🌿❄️🥢
This week, our children engaged in a variety of sensory-rich invitations to play:
- 🧊 Ice and shaving cream: Watching textures change as ice melted into foam sparked curiosity and early science thinking.
- 🐧 Polar animals on ice blocks: Children imagined arctic habitats, shared stories, and explored temperature through touch.
- 🐒 Floating monkeys and tweezers: Water play became a fine motor challenge as children used tools to rescue floating animals.
- 🍚 Rice and oats with measuring cups: Pouring, scooping, and comparing volumes supported early maths concepts like capacity and estimation.
- 🥢 Chinese pancake play with bamboo and soup spoons: Cultural props invited imaginative cooking, collaborative storytelling, and respectful exploration of diverse tools and traditions.
Through these experiences, children practised:
- Scientific thinking: observing change, predicting outcomes, and testing ideas
- Mathematical reasoning: measuring, comparing, and estimating
- Fine motor control: grasping, pinching, and coordinating hand movements
- Social learning: sharing space, narrating play, and building stories together
