was amazing and the time I spent investing in future of TSC was powerful.

My gratitude for Mia and Fi .business runs deep. They are both incredibly supportive and intelligent humans. They have created a community that promotes kindness, inclusion and a heavy dose of real talk when you need it and I don’t know where I would be without this community.

It’s devastating hearing this type of unsafe advice is being given to tired and vulnerable families. Regulation of the sleep consultant industry is the best way to ensure that families are getting access to safe, reliable and evidence-based advice.

But we are not there yet.

Sleep consultants can be a true life-line for parents who are utterly exhausted and this will damage the trust families have for getting sleep support.

But please know if you are struggling with sleep deprivation, there are qualified professionals who will be able to guide you with safe and effective advice.

While parents shouldn’t have to vet professionals giving them sleep advice, the reality is that is the world we are in. I hope this video helps you to feel empowered to know what to consider when choosing someone to support you on your sleep and settling journey.

New Australian research has been published looking at the relationship between screen time and sleep disturbances in littles ones 0-5 years old.

I knew The Sleep Collective community would be keen to know more about it, so here is an overview of study and my thoughts of some key takeaways.

I also did my best to keep it short while still recognizing the nuance. Not always easy!

5am. Again.

Early rising is one of the trickiest sleep issues to crack because so many things can contribute to it. Waking between 6-7am is developmentally normal for many babies. Anything before that? That’s early rising.
Here are the most common culprits to investigate:

🌙 Environment - ensure it is warm and dark in the early morning hours. In my experience with clients, this is the most common reason for persistent early rising.

🕰️ Timings - your routine timings can reinforce the start time. For example, putting your little one down early at 8am for a nap means their body learns that is nap time, so it naturally wakes at 5:30am to be ready for that nap.

😴 Total Sleep - keep a sleep diary and see if your baby’s total sleep needs have been met by 5:30am and whether a change to your routine would help address the problem.

🛌 Bedtime - an earlier bedtime will help to curb early rising. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but overtiredness can drive an early start to the day.

🏃‍♀️ Physical Activity - if your baby spends a lot of time in a high chair, pram or in the car they may not have enough opportunity to burn off energy, so when they wake during a natural period of light sleep early in the morning they use the opportunity to move their body.

🍗 Hunger - especially for little ones just starting their solids journey, genuine hunger can drive these early starts.

😃 Response - if you go in all happy, open the blinds and start their day, your baby will assume it is time to start their day. Continuing to get them up, even if that is bringing them into your bed for cuddles, entrains their body clock to wake at that time.

If you feel you have tried everything and you are still watching the sun rise before you are ready, drop your questions in the comments and let’s troubleshoot together.

Are you dealing with early rising right now? Tell me what time your little one is waking and what you have already tried 👇
