Callum, alumnus, 2022: “When you enter medical school, you have a really glorified sense of what being a doctor is. But being thrown in very quickly, you realise you know absolutely nothing.
“As you begin to progress – as an intern, a resident, a trainee – you realise you never really know what's going on. And a lot of the time it's just pretending to know, and relying on the wealth of experience you've slowly gained.
“You look around at your peers and you realise everyone is just kind of surviving and making do.
“And then it becomes real within the first week, when the person who was always right beside you to ask questions is now a phone call away. You realise it's time to step up, and that your training has set you up to do exactly that.”
Callum is a Monash-trained anaesthetic registrar, born and raised in Melbourne – and, as it turned out, able to build his career here too. He's watched fellow graduates put down roots in the communities where they trained, rural and metropolitan alike, making what he calls “real and impactful change” as they go.
Exam season is officially here, and we’re sending the biggest wave of positive energy your way!
You’ve worked so hard to get to this point and remember, you don’t have to navigate these final weeks alone.

“Change can sometimes be messy. You don’t have to manage it perfectly, you just have to stay consistent and continue showing up.” 💡
Meet Sofia Sorokina, a Monash Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine student whose path to the stethoscope was anything but ordinary.
After arriving from Ukraine, Sofia is rebuilding her life in a new country while navigating clinical rotations and being far from family. Sofia has turned every challenge into a lesson in empathy and resilience.
Now thriving in her Year 3B clinical training, Sofia is chasing her dream to specialise in dermatology and give back to the community.
Sofia's message to anyone chasing a dream against the odds: “You don’t have to be the smartest person in class, it just takes a clear goal, dedication... If you keep going, eventually you’ll get there.”

🌟Monash eExams: What you need to know🌟
Read on for some ultimate exam hacks from our MNHS Social media ambassador Sally!
📅 1. Double-Check Your Timetable
Log into Allocate+ or the Monash Study app. Verify the date, exact start time, venue, and seat number. Screenshot it so you can access it quickly on exam day.
🪪 2. Bring Valid Photo ID (Non-Negotiable)
You won't be allowed to sit the exam without it. Bring your:
- Monash student ID (physical card - best option)
- Current passport, or
- Valid driver’s licence
💻 3. Prep Your Tech & Environment
On-Campus: Bring headphones/AirPods (you may have a 1:1 online supervisor).
Off-Campus: Find a quiet, well-lit room with a clear desk. Test your internet, camera, and microphone before exam day.
📖 4. Know Your Exam Format
Confirm if your exam is open-book, closed-book, or hybrid. Review the official exam instructions so you know so you can prepare effectively.
🎒 5. Pack the Night Before
Avoid morning panic. Your essentials checklist:
💧 Water bottle & a light, high energy snack
🔌 Laptop charger (essential!)
✏️ Stationary and scrap paper for notes (if allowed)
🧮 Approved calculator (if required)
⏱️ 6. Arrive 30 Minutes Early
Give yourself a buffer to find your seat, use the restroom, and settle your nerves. Rushing creates unnecessary anxiety. We’re going for a cool, calm mindset 😌
🙋♀️ 7. Flag Issues Immediately
If you experience a technical glitch or system crash, don't panic. Raise your hand or contact the onsite supervisor. They are there to support you on the day.
💪 8. Trust yourself & go smash it
Take a deep breath before you start. You’ve revised, practised, and put in the effort — now it’s your time to perform ✨ Stay focused, manage your time well, and give it your best shot.
Good luck!
