Legal Term: Res Ipsa Loquitur
A Latin phrase meaning "the thing speaks for itself," used in tort law to describe a situation where the occurrence of an accident or injury implies negligence because it would not typically happen without someone’s failure to exercise reasonable care. For example, if a surgical tool is left inside a patient after surgery, the doctrine may apply because such an event suggests negligence without needing direct proof.
