Engaging children in a deep joy for learning that nurtures curious minds and kind hearts Education

Photos from The Learning Space - Coburg's post 13/05/2026

We are incredibly privileged to have Tilly’s pedagogical knowledge, passion, and warmth at The Learning Space. As our Assistant Manager and Educational Leader, Tilly nurtures and uplifts pedagogy and practice with deep care, authenticity, and intention.
Her relationships with children, families, and educators are deeply valued, and her wisdom in pedagogy and inquiry-based learning continues to inspire our practice every day. Tilly brings thoughtfulness, reflection, joy, and heart into all that she does.
“Walking down the street I grew up in as a disillusioned nursing student, I heard the infectious sounds of joy and wonder coming from the local childcare and felt like it was somewhere I wanted to be! 15 years of working and studying in the profession and I am so proud to be educational leader of a centre which matches my philosophy and understanding of children, how they learn and the importance of building a love of learning which will become the base for a lifetime of knowledge hunting.”
“My practice and interactions are guided by a deep belief in the value of every individual, and in the idea that when people come together openly, honestly, and respectfully, meaningful change and growth are possible. This is one of the reasons I feel so connected to inquiry-based learning, as it creates opportunities for educators and children to think collaboratively, ask meaningful questions, and build understandings that are genuinely connected to children’s ideas, experiences, and development.”
“I believe it is a privilege to live and work on Country that holds the knowledge, stories, and traditions of the world’s oldest continuing culture. As a white Australian, I believe it is important to engage honestly with our country’s history, including the harm caused by racism and colonisation, so we can learn from the past and work towards a more just and respectful future. I am committed to honouring and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and to supporting future generations to recognise the beauty, connection, and wisdom embedded within these knowledge systems.”

What a privilege to be part of this time in children’s lives!”

An Invitation to Play

As educators, we are always asking ourselves, ‘What is this environment inviting the child to do?’

An invitation to play is more than simply setting up a space with materials. It’s about creating possibility. We thoughtfully design experiences that spark curiosity without prescribing outcomes because an invitation is just that, an invitation, not a direction.

These experiences are open-ended and non-prescriptive. They don’t tell children what to do, but instead open up opportunities to think, imagine, problem-solve, and express themselves in their own unique ways. There is no “right” way to engage. Children are offered the time, space, and materials to explore their own ideas, test theories, and revisit their learning.

Through this, children become active participants in their learning. They make choices, return to ideas, and build their own understandings of the world around them.
When we thoughtfully design these invitations, we are showing the children we believe:You are capable. Your ideas matter. This space is for you.

Our spaces are thoughtfully designed to invite curiosity, exploration, and deep thinking from the very beginning.

Through open ended materials, natural elements, and intentional design, we create environments where our youngest learners are encouraged to explore, wonder, and follow their interests at their own pace.

Inquiry based learning begins with the environment. When children feel inspired by the space around them, learning becomes meaningful, purposeful, and guided by their natural curiosity.

✨ The garage sale to raise funds for the Pyjama Foundation was a roaring success! ✨

The sun came out just as we were setting up and stayed with us the whole way through. It was such a joy to see children and families browsing the donated toys, carefully choosing which special treasure or treat to take home.

When it was time to pack up, we not only had full hearts but also full heads of ideas. Future possibilities like a seedling swap were already being suggested. 🌱

Back in the kindergarten, the children eagerly helped count the money. This led to fascinating conversations about the size and value of money, the pictures on coins and notes, and the important ways the Pyjama Foundation might use these funds to support children in need. We wrote a letter to the Pyjama Foundation and children drew some pictures to send with the money of what they had bought and donated. 💜

The best part? Our children are already dreaming up what we could do next! Perhaps our next fundraising efforts could go towards something special for our own kindergarten, such as, a big outdoor resource. What a powerful, real-life lesson in how communities can come together to make a difference for others and for ourselves.

Last week we had some baby possums fall out of a tree into our garden. The possums were trying to save themselves from a crow attack and perhaps luckily found themselves in the care of our wonderful educators, one of whom even caught one while it was falling from the tree. This of course brought a lot of curiosity and wonder from the children, one even describing it as 'the best day ever!' We spoke about the possums, feeling worried that they might be injured having fallen from such a height. Together we drew some pictures for the possums to help them feel better. Our educator Tom brought the possums to the vet where they reassured us that they would be well looked after. I'm sure this is a moment that will live on in our memories for a long time!

Pyjama Day Garage Sale
Wear, Share & Show You Care!
This term, our kinder kids have been on a mini community inquiry, asking, “How can we help others in our community?”
The answer? By rolling up our (pyjama) sleeves and holding a garage sale to support The Pyjama Foundation.
The Pyjama Foundation works to change the story for children in out-of-home care, pairing them with caring volunteer mentors who help open doors to brighter futures.
While children are always excited to (sleep) walk into kinder in their PJs, we’ve been talking about the meaning behind the day and why we do this.
The children have been gathering toys, books, and goodies they no longer use and brainstorming other ways to fundraise (one generous soul even offered to donate their house!)
We’ve also been busy beading, baking, and bedazzling special items to sell, and one of our talented educators will be painting faces too!
*Garage Sale*
When: Friday 16th August – from 11:00am
Where: 222a Bell Street, Coburg (in the carpark)

Below are some of the posters children have been making to stick up around the community!

Come find a treasure, enjoy a treat, and help us turn bedtime comfort into real-world change.
