Teeny weeny little chromosomes sit pretty under 2000x magnification. A single, tightly wound DNA molecule makes up each delicate X shape.

The cross over point in the X is called a centromere. It keeps things aligned and acts as a scaffold for other molecules during various processes. Each end is tipped with a telomere - repetitive bits of DNA that keep the strands from unravelling ​like fraying threads.

​If the molecules weren't twisted around histone proteins like string on a spool, the DNA in a nucleus from a single cell would stretch an incredible 6 ft (1.80 m).
